Like many on here i appreciate Mike and his youtube videos and have tested out some of his suggestions and kit recommendations, and have adopted most of them to fit my own methods and kit.
When however he designed a knife that was at odds with the standard bushie with its scandi grind i...
discovered this on AOM, and thought i should share. seems to be a series, but havent dived down the rabbit warren yet. think it'll become my lunch time read for a while...

i think what you've achieved there is a basic form of fractional distillation, which is what you do to crude oil to make it into bitumen, heavy oils, light oils, diesel and then petrol.
with out going into too much detail (because im not an expert!) its all to do with the length of the...
currently separated from my sewing machine due to work sadly, but think that might be the best option. completely custom!
thanks for the linknitambur, will definitely consider that
have recently acquired a Swedish LK50 pack and want to put a waist belt on it. i believe the ALICE one fits fairly well.
Any one know a UK source? Ive found them on eBay but they're all from the US and about £20 P&P which is a bit much.
cheers

im looking at mounting 2 axes on my wall as a (usable) room feature. thinking some form of wood hook to hang them on, but was wondering if anyone else has done this or has any smart ideas.
Cheers

depends how big bits you got, you can make traditional gathering baskets and things from it. for the smaller bits how about some box's, match box? butter box? pen pot for work?
you could push the boat out and make a miniature canoe, or how about a brimmed hat. do you do archery? howabout a...
wasn't that pine tar? they collected it form pine stumps in a bog. though im sure birch tar would give a similar effect. now where to find a nice pine tree and a work shop to make some skis...

Looks like it might be a no go:
"Chemists have discovered that distilling pitch from birch bark requires an oxygen-free environment and sustained temperatures of over 650° F"
source: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/evolution/defy-stereotypes.html
so that's 340°C - a tad beyond your normal oven...
it makes a good thermo-plastic glue that's sort of like natures epoxy.
cheers for the insights guys. i hadn't thought about the possibility of it producing gas, this worries me!
not too worried about the smell, the tar ive produced never smelt really before. i think i'm going to try and find...
Has any one tried to make birch tar in a conventional oven at all?
i have a good store of birch bark (collected form dead trees) but nowhere to light a fire.
was thinking of using the 2 pot method and putting it in a hot oven (200ºc+) but wasnt sure if it would get hot enough. thoughts and...
first obtain your brass, a hole punch, needle nose pliers and a small ball pein / tack hammer:
punch your hole in your leather with the hole punch (the 6mm one is a good size). pop the brass in. flay out the edges gently by pushing the nose of the needle nose in the hole. i have a tiny ball...
top notch! i like the carving especially. :-)
if you wanted a cheap way to finish the edges add some boot polish with an old tooth brush and melt it in with a lighter. a few coats and it comes up pretty well
£17 + £16 P+P for any that want them. all the way from sunny poland

A bushcrafty solution to this would be the heated ground trick, with heated rocks buried under where you sleep. never tried it in a tent though.
generally i rely on good insulation, a good thick pad (thermarest or similar) and a good sleeping bag. can vouch for the Hot waterbottle and sock...
Check out Ian Atkinson leather http://www.ianatkinson.net/leather/ he does some interesting bits plus he has tutorials on youtube too which are pretty handy.
as for an usual design that should be your own. have a look around and combine ideas, tooled friction fit pouches look good but it would...
i know its a short sighted article but it was what prompted the thought.
right, off to look at pattern welded steel and find some pallet strapping.
thanks guys
was reading an article on Japanese steel, (link below) about how they blend hard steel and softer iron to make their blades, and i got to to thinking how i could replicate it using an old hacksaw blade and some soft iron nails.
a cursory search of the internet didn't reveal anyone who had tried...
