Preparing for troubled times ahead - Advice on what is needed.....

I have an original1885 map of where I used to live. The W on the map marked where there was water. Some are dry today but I know of one that always had water in.

Preparing for troubled times ahead - Advice on what is needed.....

I’m at work this week and have done my usual trip to Sainsbury’s for my weeks food. The food bank box is normally pretty full by now. On my pass by this evening I couldn’t help noticing that it was completely empty. Ok a lot of folk are on ‘oliday but I felt this was perhaps a sign of things to...

    Cooking with a Trangia stove

Love my Trangia. This has travelled with me everywhere to date but I have just bought a ‘Camping Gaz’ canister stove for convenience. This won’t be doing lightweight treks but for simplicity and the ‘I’m-hungry-I-need-hot-food’ scenario I can’t fault it. S

training and safety use for all kinds of portable stoves, heaters and-such

Ha! So true. If you’ve used a Primus for camping you will be very aware of what the dangers are. Hot things and modern materials don’t mix at all. Simples. So keep them very separate. S

Quiet inflatable insulated mat for comfort?

Have a look-see on the Alpkit website.https://alpkit.com Their original ‘fat airic’ was reasonable but in the end all six that I owned failed. Meh! I have one on my work bed with hole as an extra bit of comfort and I have another used for ‘softenings’ under my roof ladder. So I won’t be...

    Ducklings

Ours moved on to the neighbours lake ‘coz the pond dried out. This is of great benefit to the newts and hopefully lowers the leach population. Next visitors will be the roving band of this years youngsters on their way to said lake. 20 or so of this years brood chaperoned by one Mrs duck! S

Fine weave netting be they purpose built or in kit form are a real bonus as they make a huge difference to open grown plants. The difference in our plot between plants is double growth size. S

    Folding knife recommendation

I found one of these. It had some surprisingly good reviews and is my daily carry. Being in the maintenance trade I am probably ok but it is a locker, so your choice. https://heinnie.com/tekut-zero S

what is the best way to pack a backback for hiking and camping

My platoon were sent on a training course to learn about grenades on the grenade training range, which was an interesting and quite frightening structure dating from the turn of the century. Deep ditches either side of the walkways just in case you messed up with your live throwing. I wondered...

what is the best way to pack a backback for hiking and camping

A while ago I read a book that involved soldiering and travelling by foot overland. The most memorable part irrespective of the ‘how’ was ‘where’. Where you put an item so it can be found easily. Know your way round your backpack. S

    Your Ideal Campsite

Travelling around Oz on my motorbike I stopped in some fab spots. The best were near boreholes so I could swim and watch the wildlife drink. Coastal places with water particularly up in the North made me anxious because of crocs so I avoided stopping overnight here. I also went more than a...

    Hot weather survival

My wife has strategically placed water places all round our yard. We have a couple of old Belfast sinks as reptileariums for the newts frogs and toads that we know are around plus a number of plastic dustbin lids for the birds and mammals. They are filled daily. The pond is dry much to the...

    Foot path erasure.

Modern folk forget that a lot of paths were for locals to get to church or to work. These paths mainly ran between local farms. In my yoof a number were wiped from all maps drawn after the 1885 datum. These paths ran right through farm yards as workers used them to get to work on the farm if...

I was walking along a lane a while ago and ahead of me was what looked like the usual and quite common pile of horse poop. As I drew closer I saw it was moving and disentangled itself to reveal a family of four weasels that had been playing rolly-polly tag games. Fab pic! S

As I’m now in the ‘older’ age bracket I have quite a few lady friends who have now gone through menopause. This is simply part of life but please seek advice, which will help IMO. S
