    The big four is kind of a goal. Bear - Not visual, only very fresh tracks and killed prey (couple of hours old). Wolf - Not visual, only fresh killed prey, fresh tracks (less than an hour old) and heard howling in the winter night. Wolverine - Not visual - but some day old tracks around a dead...

    I have to dissagree with my countryman on this one. Green winter birch burns just fine, but it has to be frosen, meaning do not put the wood close to the fire to thaw it up. Store the freshly cut and split birch wood as far away from the fire as practicaly possible, and put the wood in the fire...

    The square box on the pipe is probably some kino of spark/soot catcher to prevent sparks to fly out of the pipe and ignite the surrounding woods. Have seen similar devices on old lumberjack barracks and hunting cabins.
