    SAK blade snapping?

I'm working on a project with a friend that involves Swiss Army Knives, specifically Victorinox SAKs. My friend is a little worried about the durability of the knife (described as 'a bit wussy'). I know what they mean, it does seem thin and has the look of being more delicate than say a...

Making an Iron Age Leatherwork kit

You need the tools for the things you intend to make. Needles are more a cloth thing, though the bone/antler needles could be used for sewing thonging rather than thread (or sinew). Boar's bristles are the most common leather sewing tool later and i suspect in the IA too. Knife. A small sharp...

To stay or to go? Intentionally goin

Personally if the weather is more likely to be grim than not (even if not as bad as forecast) i would stay at home and do the fun things that i never get around to. Even though i agree the winter is 'the time for crafts', it seldom works like that because the days are short, dark, cold, wet and...

    Fallkniven NL4 irregular lamination line

If you don't like a wavy weld line, never buy a handmade laminated blade! The straightness of the line is down to even pressure, even thickness and even temperature when being welded and then subsequent forgings. So the idea of a straight line is pretty much hypothetical I would say! Chances...

    charcoal question

I suspect the gritty nature is more down to the species than the level of conversion. Generally speaking, the harder the wood then the harder the resulting charcoal, assuming proper conversion (pyrolysis). If the charcoal has been overcooked (normally because it was too hot in the kiln) then...

The Steam Tent Co-operative at the Wilderness Gathering

It was a mighty fine display and certainly added an extra dimension to the show this year :) I hope more people will join you next year and there will be a veritable Steam Village!

    Silky Katana at the Moot

I've got a katanboy and was planning to bring it along to sell ;) It's slightly obscene but does cut well once you get into a rhythm

    ash dieback

About a third of my ash trees are nkw showing some dieback this year. Most of those are showing 20-50% bare branches, but some are defo dead already. The deaduns are all young too. I'm going to take down some of the bigger ones before they get too far gone so they are less dangerous to work under

    Hardtack Cutter

I hadn't come across a hardtack cutter before, so stuck the name into google and looked at the images thrown up. Lots of simple ideas there, including one that is made by taking a square (with rounded corners) of wood, nailing a strip of metal (a tin can would work) around the outside and a...

    Loose Axe Head?

In that case, I suggest you never visit my workshop and look at the tools I use every day! :D lol Same goes for the whole 'tidy space, tidy mind' attitude to a workspace. I clear up enough to work and not be a safety hazard; I only go to any extra effort when I'm teaching (I need more space...

    Loose Axe Head?

People (especially on or thanks to the the internet) get too precious over axes and how the wedges look. To me even the finest handmade axe is still just a tool and if it needs a load of ugly extras added to make it work, then it saves me replacing or totally repairing it for that much longer...
