    Emergency signalling

I should not worry too much it is neither a curved sword or a hexamine block.

    Knives for beginners?

I do not remember my first knife it would likely have been a not very good folder, and my first sheath knife was about as crap as they come, my dad was not pleased that I swapped a decent British Army jack knife for it in the playground. Not that his knife was any better I broke the tip off it...

    £250 survival knife...

Well if it costs 250 nicker I am sure I can survive without it.

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

We do, we tend to stand out, however perhaps that is why nobody messes with me, I am kind of scary.

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

I would agree, if you are a veteran camper it is likely you have accrued enough stuff to get you through a few difficult situations, I keep a canister gas stove in the car and small Kelly kettle, that is not prepping, they just live there.

    Email change warning.

I am back after having my account locked down. I needed to change my email, however I was not aware that it could lead to a problem with some email servers. I had changed to an outlook address only to find that all the verification posts from the forum were being automatically rejected by the...

Pump Drill and Bear comes clean

I have just had a bright spark, why do we have to go all primitive technology when you can pick up a hand drill almost anywhere, has anyone ever used one successfully to make fire by friction?

    Open University.

I could write an essay on the evolution of the academic essay. I first went to Uni in the 70s and failed my degree. Back then essays were hand written with a pen whatever one of those is. I don't remember being taught how to introduce citations or anything like that. Jump forward a quarter...

    Drawknife recommendations

I finally got round to buying one off Dave Budd. Expensive, yes, but he is very good at what he does, and the tool is good at doing what it ought too as well.

    New member- bushcraft qualification advice?

A good point there, I do what I do and I know what I know and there is nobody stopping me, but if I wanted a proper job in forestry or arboriculture I do not think I would get very far at all and if I did take a formal course I am not sure there is anything much useful I would learn other than...

Chest Rigs - How Useful Are They?

They are becoming quite the fashion, I saw a "yoof" in my local store this evening wearing one, he also had his pajama trousers on.

Craighill-desk-knife. Candidate for worst edged tool ever.

Ye gods, even I could make something like that with a brass rod and a file, and maybe better looking too.

When to straighten a stick to make into a walking stick?

I read this in a difference sense, that is when is it necessary to bend a stick. As a rule I never do, the shape of the stick gives it character and a bent stick can work just as well as a straight one and act as a conversation piece.

I have been watching Red Fox lately, he seems to be a bit of a tinkerer which I like.

Alternative to a sleeveless cotton vest

I got one of those black New Zealand merino sheep shearers vests years ago, extra thick and extra long. It has got a couple of holes in it now, but still does a good job.

What was the smell of school dinners ?

Yes they did used to have a pig bin, not everything ended in the pig bin though, if they happened to cook a bit too much pudding, some of it got taken home, perks of the job.

    Why a folding knife

Yes and I concur with that from my own experience.

    Why a folding knife

People do not necessarily stop doing a thing because there is a law against it, they stop when it no longer becomes socially acceptable. In my teens I wore a bowie knife on my belt with my dad's approval, nobody in authority ever said to you it was against the law or you should not be doing it...

    Why a folding knife

Last few decades? I think it is longer than that, peasants and nobles both would wear a dagger on their belt in the middle ages, but that was before pockets, I don't think knives have been worn as a fashion accessory since then except for National Costume. Well with the exception of teenage boys...
