    Tilley windfall

Yes the clip on ones with the green top fit Coleman lamps. They hang from the fitting. On a Tilley lamp the tube passes through the mantle.

    Tilley windfall

The Tilley mantles are a tube type and 'tie' on to a groove top and bottom, the coleman ones are a cup type with just an opening at the top and are also smaller.

    185K Singer advice

You are right about the eyelets. We put corner ones in with a hydraulic press. The price of a small dinghy sail will be far less than a good zig-zag sewing machine. If doing it yourself don't forget to align the grain of the material correctly. Also in the patches.

    185K Singer advice

Blasted phone ..... I was going to add that a good second hand zig-zag machine , something like a Durcopp will set you back about £400 not viable (in my opinion) to alter a second hand sail unless you are going to use it a lot in the future. You are going to be sewing through about 7 layers of...

    185K Singer advice

As c_claycomb said the 185k is a straight stitch machine. Not any good for sail making.

placement of roof bars on a pickup

I made some webbing straps with eyelets to go on the wing bolts under the bonnet , they fold underneath when not in use, to tie the front of the kayak down . Tied to the tow bar at the back. Just extra insurance in case of self launching on the motorway.

placement of roof bars on a pickup

Personally I would have one on the cab and one on the hard top. If you have them close together on the cab with 17 foot boats you will have a lot of windage- twist effect on the boats. Good thread over on Song of the Paddle about boats on cars. My kayak is 17 foot which was fine on my estate car...

    Opinion for a backpack mod

I have one of those in the camping cupboard. I will see if I can dig it out and look for labels, tho I can not remember anything on it. I don't think it will carry well if you take the frame off. You might as well buy something closer to what you want and add your leather and patches to it.

    Umbrellas

I have a Fulton Storm shield umbrella and it has been used at camp and as a sail with the kayak ,and a canoe with two people in. It is bombproof. Not as bulky as a golf brolly, its a metre tall and has a string on the carry bag to put over your shoulder. Last time I looked they were about £25.

Adding midge net to bivy bag?

Buy some 1inch herringbone webbing, it folds in half easily, and sew round the border of your midge netting . Then sew this to the bag. Otherwise the stitches will pull through.
