For what it's worth, I also have the Elixir 2 and would echo everything that Van Wild said, it's an awesome little tent. A genuine 2-person tent, and a palace for one plus kit!
You sir are an inspiration to us all. Very well done and thanks for sharing all of these wonderful projects. My highlight of the bunch was your Ash whisky cup, I think I'm going to have to try and make one for myself.
I echo the previous comments about the MSR Elixir 2, it's an awesome tent and one that I upgraded to from the Vango Banshee 200.
The Banshee was a very good tent but it did have some drawbacks, most notably for me was the height. At 5'10" I could not sit up comfortably in it and the vestibule...
+1 for the DD Superlight tarp, great bit of kit. They also do a couple of other sizes in the superlight tarp range.
As an alternative option - take a look at the Helikon Tex poncho. These are relatively cheap (£25ish) and work great for those eventualities that you need to chuck something in...
Hi thanks for watching and sorry for the slow response, I've not been on this forum for a little while.
I'm really enjoying the bivvy. But, due to the lockdown I've only been able to use it a couple of times. However, it's becoming a firm favourite for a multitude of reasons.
The good...
Cheers Paul, hope you're well and sorry for my slow response, I've not been on here for a while! I'm always up for a chin wag around the camp fire though and it'll be good to catch-up at some point.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it and I hope your doing ok across the pond. The madness of coronavirus has really kicked in over here this week and the government have really stepped up their response. We're not on lockdown by any means but everyone is taking responsibility to self isolate. Hopefully...
Hi all,
Thought I'd share a link to a video that I made during last weekends woodland wild camp. I packed in my little 1litre dutchy and baked a nice loaf of bread. I also had a bit of fun practicing feathersticks and enjoyed some success.
This was also my first camp out in a new Dutch army...
Good experiment and thanks for sharing some useful snippets of information. You must be reading my mind at the moment as I too have grown a little wary of an over reliance on birch bark as a tinder and have started to wander down this rabbit hole of education! I'm heading out on a camp next week...
By way of an update - I ended up getting a brand new Dutch Army Hooped Bivi! It's the FECSA version, which means that the zips are a bit fragile. But at least with a brand new one, I know that it hasn't been abused and I can take extra care with it. Might even look at modifying it with a YKK...
Thanks and indeed I have clocked the OR range of bivy's. They look nice and are impressively lightweight. I was initially very keen on the helium bivy as the pertex fabric is normally pretty good. However, I was a little put off with the criticism that their design gets in terms of the way the...
Cheers, I think I'll definitely avoid the FECSA dutch bivi's. I missed out on an ebay auction of an XL Carinthia version of the Dutch bivi earlier this week, the bidding went a bit mad in the final 20seconds! It ended up going for £146 + £14 delivery from Germany. I know they're good, but that...
Thanks, I'm familiar with those bags and they do look awesome. A quick google search shows them retailing for £472 though and that's a bit rich for me! I'll keep my eyes peeled on ebay though. A small tarp or poncho is a must when bivvy camping in the rain though, makes for a nice admin area.
Cheers, I had seen that. Simon makes some good videos and knows a thing or two about bushcraft. To be honest, it was that video which flagged up the issue with the FECSA version of the Dutch hooped bivi. I then looked back at some other videos on youtube and discovered that a lot of people were...
Cheers Paul, agree that a tarp and bivi should work well. I'm interested in the hooped variety as they also have better bug protection for the summer.
The bivi's that I've listed above should also enable you to store some kit inside as well. I've seen that some people store their packs down...
Hi All,
I thought I'd reach out to you guys and gauge your thoughts on hooped bivi bags. I'm out camping once a month, every month (have been for the last 3 and a bit years) and have been doing a lot of bivi camps. I'm enjoying it and fancy treating myself to a posh new bivi bag. Part of the...
Nice one, glad you enjoyed it. Des will be pleased as punch when he see's that people are listening to the podcast!
I'm obviously a bit biased in my opinion, but I rather like that Des is keeping things authentic with it (farts an' all)!
Cheers Scott and thanks for the sub. Yes the tarp did deflect the wind quite effectively, although I did also choose a fairly sheltered spot which undoubtedly helped quite a bit. I was also surprised at how well the superlight tarp performed, it's a worryingly thin fabric, but it has so far...
