    Tiny little hatchet or tomahawk….suggestions?

That’s it, but I’d say my head was, maybe ⅓ smaller, and the haft, possible 2 or 3 inches longer. I’ll dig it out tomorrow and post a picture. The head on mine is all polished metal. I did have a concern the the blade wouldn’t be tempered, but it has been fine in use, keeps an edge fairly well...

    Tiny little hatchet or tomahawk….suggestions?

A few years ago (so I can’t look up the seller on eBay), I bought a lovely little axe head from a Bulgarian blacksmith off eBay. It’s in the, what I think of as the East European style, with a bearded axe head that leaves a space behind it for your hand to grip the head itself- not sure how to...

Who was the genius who conned us into believing we need a fixed blade knife for bushcraft?

I was under the impression from what I’ve read, that the Sami traditionally used these (Leukus) in areas where there was only really stunted birch, to herd their reindeer. In that scenario, they’re well up to the job

    What did you buy today?

I’ve been stocking up on spirits while it’s Black Friday. Bought a bottle of Aber Falls single malt whisky- very nice as an “everyday” tipple (not that I do have a tipple everyday.Lol). A couple of bottles of 10 year old Bulleit Bourbon, bought one, then another after tasting, it’s rather...

    What did you buy today?

It looks proper old school, being canvas. The colours seem to enhance it as a whole. I wouldn’t pick those colours if it was clothing, but they look good as a pack, and, like you say, they’re subtle . They’ll blend in nicely if you want a low key walk in the woods.

Why is Royal Mail so rubbish

For me personally, £60 or £70 is a hell of a lot of money and I would expect it to be left with a neighbour not just abandoned for someone to pick up which is exactly what would happen. All that said, there’s a gunnel gate which is obviously mine and my neighbours which it could have been put...

Why is Royal Mail so rubbish

I didn’t, the tracking was a Chinese company which I’d tracked up to when it entered the country, but then it changed to FedEx without informing me, so there was no opportunity to select an alternative pick up point, such as my local Spar, which is what I normally do. I would have expected them...

Why is Royal Mail so rubbish

I can’t remember what parcel company it was, but the last two Sofirn torches bought from their website have been left on my doorstep, which is basically a terraced house where the front door opens onto the street- with no garden, pedestrians walk inches away. Luckily, I came home within 10...

Sold Book - Survival skills of the North American Indians - Peter Goodchild

Gutted I missed this, luckily I managed to snag an older hardback version off eBay for a little bit more than this.

    Military Surplus Tents/Bashas/Bivvies

If it’s the one that’s camo on one side, and, I think, green or brown on the other, I have a set. The pouch it sometimes comes with (I bought mine separate) doubles as a hood that buttons onto the poncho. I’m not at home and haven’t used it for some years, but I seem to remember, it’s just a...

    Buying a new head-torch

Sofirn are great budget torches, they do a range of headlamps starting at less than £20. They don’t use proprietary batteries, just commonly available ones. I buy direct from China using their web site, they arrive in less than 2 weeks, they’re a lot less than the same torches on Amazon, plus...

    EG Ultimate Match -

Surely a “survival instructor” would be teaching their students how to make use of what might have- ferro rod, batteries, flint and steel, magnifying glass etc. Not something like this that they’re unlikely to have in a” survival scenario “. Also, seems a bit twee and convenient how everybody...

An LK35 pack without its frame (obviously)?

    Chest Infections.

I got single pneumonia when I was living in India a few decades ago. I was staying in the midst of the tiny streets off the great Jama Masjid, Old Delhi, in the winter, everybody coughing and hawking, crowded streets pack with people and rickshaw jams. I had no “chest infection” symptoms at all...

    Military Surplus Tents/Bashas/Bivvies

I have a similar affliction for military tents and mess kits. I have examples of pretty much every mess kit going, a great thing is, most of them were only about a tenner each, apart from the M40s and M44s. My favourite is probably the Russian VDV (paratrooper) one that also has an integral...

Sleeping bags for larger (fat!) person

I have the Snugpak Softie Elite 2 which already has an expander panel built in, it also has hooks so you can shorten it if needed, not that I need those, but I do use the expander panel, it’s so much more comfortable. Standard size sleeping bags are just too snug for me. I really like it, I’ve...

    Salt

I’ve always been a tad ambivalent about Anglesey salt. I knew a couple who lived just off the straits, they used to get seawater for their pet lobster. One of them worked for the environment agency, and, for some reason took in a sample in to work to get it tested, though they didn’t tell the...
