    New member- bushcraft qualification advice?

I know an awful lot of utterly cack handed graduates, and an awful lot of incredibly capable tradesmen.....half my family were Doctors, half were joiners or engineers....I reckoned that some mend bodies, some fix wood and others deal with metal (well, these days a lot of it's electronics) I'm...

    New member- bushcraft qualification advice?

Cross posted with TeeDee....meant to reply to earlier ones. Science students keep a Lab Book, Archaeology students keep a similar one, but more essay work. I honestly don't think that 'Bushcraft' can be a defined curriculum. Survival training, well yes, but that depends on both the location...

    New member- bushcraft qualification advice?

I didn't know it was called Bushcraft until I surfed into the forum over twenty years ago :D It was just interesting stuff that took everything from wildlife and wild living to traditional skills using natural resources. At the time I was demonstrating Ethnobotany and working with folks from...

    New member- bushcraft qualification advice?

It used to be said of University Graduates that the degree just proved you were clever enough to do it, and your first employer actually taught you the job.

    New member- bushcraft qualification advice?

I always thought that Bushcraft was an umbrella for among the last bastions of capably sane people :) It wasn't a tick box list of, 'every effort is a win, deserves a medal', type of mentality, of massaged egos. I'm still of that mind, but reality says that folks who want to make a business of...

    Trangia cook set

We had ones like that in the Scouts away back in the 70's....and I think they weren't new then. The fitting at the side not only took the strap but we had a sort of handle...do you mind Baby's Pushers ?....that shaped end, that fitted into the same 'slot' to lift the pot. Very neat.

    Any idea what it is?

I was told that they could be smelted to make iron, but that they're so full of sulphur that it makes a horrible job of it for second rate metal. I haven't had much luck trying to strike it to make a spark either. Frustrating stuff, but much used in industrial chemicals these days apparently.

    Surviving the Garvellachs

@Scots_Charles_River Thank you for this :) I tripped down the rabbit hole and found Jo Wolfe's lovely site. I had read some of it before but seeing it afresh and much expanded was a pleasure. The Hazel Tree is a gentle place to sit and read with a cuppa :)

    Guest Speakers / Outreach

I set up and ran the local Beaver colony for years. There's a lot of help out there; the Scout Association itself will have a local hierarchy of people, and they'll be full of good advice. Off the top of my head, people who are happy to come and talk are the local Countryside Rangers, and...

    W W U do?

I had one of those, passed it along to Motorbikeman and never heard any more of it. It was a butcher's gammon cutting knife.

    No Mow May

Ah, no, I don't not mow for a month, I don't mow until May is by. That way it's like cutting hay.

    No Mow May

The newts are actually why I started not cutting my grass. We have two ponds now, and they have newts and frogs....and they hatch the tiniest little amphibians which leave and disperse through the grass. I just could not face the thought that I was mincing them up when I cut the grass. I don't...

    No Mow May

I have neighbours, and they cut their grass to the mm. I trim my edges, keep the paths clear, and leave the rest to grow and bloom :) It actually looks deliberate.

    No Mow May

It's a lovely day here, and someone commented that a neighbour is already firing up their lawnmower......I'm not cutting our grass, not until after May. Our lawn has pignuts, self heal, daisies, shepherd's purse, lily of the valley, clover, poppies, wood millet, many different grasses, etc...

Help required identifying this old Daniel Silcock tool

If it's a hoof trimmer, those were called buttress trimmers......might be more information on old army sites, look for farriers, perhaps cWW1 ? they used a lot of mules and donkeys as well as horses.

    Eurohike Sandero 4

That was pretty much my deal with the boot liner....it dries off so easily, washes clean of mud and grass with no fuss. Best bit too is that it opens up to give me a dry area to sort stuff out. Keep it simple; it works fine :)

    Oaks and oaks ...

There's an enormous difference there though. Dire wolves are extinct for thousands of years, the last aurochs died in Poland in the 1600's......and their descendants, albeit mixed breed, are still here.
