    Are you a GEARDO?

It depends… I’m pretty minimalist in some of the gear I take on trips and I like to use the same things for many different scenarios. Eg my cooking kit hasn’t changed in about 12 years now, I’ve figured out what really works and very happy with it all. However…. I do have a rather large axe...

    Bushcraft films

I think a few people lost their lives on the pilgrimage too. A shame but understandable really.

    I’ve started smoking again

I would guess that the powder needs to be right in order to have enough oxygen around it in order to simply smoulder and not ignite. Too fine = tightly packed and no oxygen so it will go out and too coarse = too much oxygen and it will become flame. Think similarly to a bow drill ember. It is...

    I’ve started smoking again

The set up is around £40-50 so pretty accessible really. The dust is key though, and unfortunately not replicable easily either. I’ve tried with many of my commercial woodworking machines and nothing can create the same coarseness of dust that’s needed for it to work properly.

    I’ve started smoking again

Yeah sure. It’s a ProQ cold smoke generator, you need to buy the wood dust but it comes in all different varieties and it’s reasonably priced. You add the dust to the tray and then light the end with a candle, once smouldering you remove the candle and it slowly smoulders around the spiral for...

Paraffin lamps for a lamp newbie

Looking good Chris. Just wondering if anybody has used a reflector on their lantern and how well they do if your hanging one? The thing I don’t like about feurhand lanterns is the fact they light the sky more than the area around you.

Fantastic job @scruff The grana padano is a great idea. Imagine that grated over a poached egg on toast! :encourage:

    I’ve started smoking again

The result this morning after 10 hours in the ty mwg. Tightly wrapped with cling film once it’s done seals in the smoke and the wonderful aromas and flavours that go with.

I ordered some whisky barrel dust last night. Looking forward to trying that one.

    I’ve started smoking again

@TeeDee I’m not convinced about infusing liquid with smoke, I’ve seen a lot of products where smoke is added to cocktails for flavouring but I think k more for flare than anything. Most smoke is added to the grain before distilling… I wonder about adding some smoked grains or similar might add...

    I’ve started smoking again

I’ve been a smoker on and off for years now, and with the coming festivities I decided I’d take it up again. The old ty mwg was looking a bit worse for ware and never really reached its full potential. I recently found some hygiene board in a skip (still with the blue plastic on I might add...

    Stormy weather

Power has come back on for us this evening. (We lost it in the night again) Friends in the next village have been without since Friday so we’re pretty lucky. Still no Wi-Fi though and only access to 4G in the bedroom. How did we ever cope?!

    Stormy weather

Yeah. The dog wasn’t impressed, we let him kip on the sofa for the rest of the night. The good news is my new waterproofs got a thorough testing and work really well.
