    Does damp make a difference?

Have a look at the Exped DownMat. I'm very, very impressed with mine. Having a good mat is more important than a 'good' sleeping bag - it is the mat that insulates you from the ground It has a comfort rating of -24*C, rolls up 'fairly' small and weighs in at 880g, Built in pump, DownMat 7 M...

    Not British made anymore!

Exactly the same as the UK motorcycle industry in the '60s. "No one wants those lightweight, 2-stroke, shiny chrome things from Japan"

    BLO and lacquer?

If you want to try and get as much of the BLO back out of the wood, pout it in a black garbage sack and stick it outside in the sun for a few hours, remove, wipe down, repeat. This is the way we do it with WW2 firearms where BLO or RLO was the standard method of wood protection.

    Best thing for finger bandaging.

I (regularly) use the same as Toddy It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing - tightening a nut, changing a tyre, or peeling veg - I always seem to be getting cuts on my fingers...

Bit of a cock-up with the road signs !

In Wales, there's a law saying that all road signs must be written in both English and Welsh. So the Highways Department, when they want to install a new sign, contact the local council who provide a Welsh translation. I assume this is usually done by e-mail, as it was in this instance. The...

    Looking for a Rucksack...

I don't pack much in the way of clothes for a '2 nighter' (3 days) and just 8 meals (food wise). I make up my 'brew-bags' with a teaspoon of powdered milk, a tea bag and 2x sweetener tablets (I'm diabetic) and put into a tiny self-seal poly bag. The sleeping bag is pretty bulky (but my very...

WANTED Pot for IKEA Drainer stove

I have found that some of the coffee / tea / sugar canisters have a 'soldered' bottom and soldered join running down the side. The problem with these is if they get to hot the solder 'lets go' and the can 'splits'. By hunting around I have found cannisters that are 'deep-drawn' (made from a...

Anger amid rise in 'dirty camping' in rural Scotland

You are absolutely correct - but it was the act of flogging, whipping or lashing that was forbidden in Britain in 1948. (It didn't seem to stop me getting the 'cane' at school in the 50's) Flogging is a form of punishment still used under Islamic Sharia law. It is the prescribed punishment for...

    *The* Gift-It-On Thread

That's a heck of an offer : The International Prototype of the Kilogram (referred to by metrologists as the IPK) is an object that was used to define the magnitude of the mass of the kilogram from 1889, when it replaced the Kilogramme des Archives,[1] until 2019, when it was replaced by a new...

    Another Post About "Poo".

A little girl walks in to the lounge one Sunday morning while her Dad is reading the paper.”Where does poo come from?” she asks. The father feeling a little perturbed that his 5 year old daughter is already asking difficult questions thinks for a moment and says: “Well you know we just ate...

Anger amid rise in 'dirty camping' in rural Scotland

Abandoned campsites strewn with litter and even human waste have increasingly been found this year in Scotland's rural areas, say outdoors groups. Locations include beauty spots in the Highlands and hillsides and woodland in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh. Hillwalkers and climbers group...

    Everyday carry.

Its always a good idea to carry the necessary equipment in case you find any Virgins that need converting (although I must admit I have had to replace the equipment several times as it has gone out of date)

    Gas bottle forge.

Sorry to be a 'damp squid' but you do realise that the gas cylinders ALWAYS belong to the gas company, you only rent them. They have recently stepped up action and taken several people to court who have been identified cutting up 'company property' (mainly those selling 'stoves' on ebay). Just...
