    Kelly kettle hacks

I struggle with balance every time I use mine, it is very topple-y - especially when using a fire striker, I tend to knock it with that action. The kettle sits well in the fire base, but the leg accessory is not sturdy at all - they sell the same one to fit all sizes of kettle, instead of a...

uses for a very holy blanket

You could fold it to a good size and then quilt it to an outer layer to make a sit mat. A cheap alternative is putting it in one or those freezer bag for life bags, and it's immediately usable on the ground.

    Hand crafted things.

A nice source for raw wool is companies that send slightly fancy food products. We support hunted meat from the Wild Food and Game company and one of my friends gets his from the dog food he orders. It's great, you are supposed to compost it but it's a wonderful material for quilts and the like.

Searching for an insulated sleeping mat (NOT inflatable!)

I use a wool blanket, and it's surprisingly good - like you, id sort of absorbed the idea that an inflatable mat was the only way. I've never used it with snow, but Ive had a good time with it throughout a regular winter. As it's a textile you can fold it any way you like - it's bulky, but it...

How to gather water from a trickle stream?

I don't know for sure, but stagnant water is dangerous in a way flowing water is not. Perhaps damming a flow to create a pool tempts one to drink from the stagnant water whereas if you've made an ad hoc well next to the flow, you're actively emptying the hole as it fills and the water never...

    Pine martin release on dartmoor.

Wrt ecological balance, the UK has basically no predators of the pine martin scale at the moment (no wild cats, no wolves) so it's good to reintroduce them. I've heard that about the squirrels too, red squirrels are better at evading them than greys. Predators do important work in these systems...

    Outstanding Goals/experiences for 2024

Mine for the rest of the year is I wanna try a 2 night wild camp, now Im competent at making hot meals. I'm extremely worried about pack weight, I've no idea what to trim down & especially with having to add additional water for a longer distance. It's a learning process! Oh and I want to make...

Where can I go to legally practice all aspects of Bushcraft without permission?

*devil's advocate hat* part of me thinks that a practice of producing your own fire-wood in some way - making friends with a tree surgeon, doing your own seasoning, foraging in the woodlands - is the more ethical way to go. It puts you directly in contact with the 'cost' of what you do. Some...

    Kelly kettle hacks

I have successfully spent a night out and cooked two meals and a coffee for the first time ^_^ ( Mechanically minded chapx, do you think it would be possible to make like. A rubber nozzle for the kettle. I've always thought the one feature it does not have is the ability to carry that first...

    What did you buy today?

Did a bit of shopping for useful things I've needed for a while: - a Mora chisel knife, for splitting down kindling (especially the tough ready to burn kindling) - some smurf poo for stropping - a billy can with a handle, a lid and a spout, which is going to do double duty as my camp cup, but...

    Natural cordage/fishing line

I don't know, but I would reconmennd trying it out! Does it have similar qualities to other things that can be made into cord? Drying it out and then tryinf to roll it, or drying then boiling it and rolling it, and seeing how it behaves as you go.

What to do with partially boggy land?

I've heard, but never actually researched, that getting unfinished trunks is actually very difficult. Nobody sells them, and for some reason, nobody has seen this gap in the market and thought to fill it. My source for this is a forestry guy I know who saw it on a gardening television program...

What to do with partially boggy land?

I want to second Broch - wetlands are one of the most threatened habitats in the isles, and one of the most important. Near me they are doing wetland restoration projects because they capture carbon so well. I don't like industrial agriculture, but IMO if it's happening then it likely is more...

    What are you currently reading?

I'm reading After the Ice, which is a description of early humans. It's really good, it's written for a popular audience, and is long and quite repetitive but it's also super chill. It's non fiction but the author has this imaginary character who is time travelling between all the sites, so...

Sold Berghaus Vulcan II Size 3

Heya, I'm potentially very interested in this one or the other one, like strongly interested but I just need to get my act together over the weekend. I don't have a rucksack like this right now and am in need of one. I've been advised to get a british military Bergen, do you know if this is...
