    Care for your compass???

Evening Alex. Compass care was a big deal for mariners of yore. Even today, most all electrical equipment you find on the Bridge, is likely to have a small panel on the reverse, showing its compass safe distance. The other effects were monitored by regular compass error obs's and annual...

Enormous Augers - and an unusual handle

The pics remind me very much of the tools used by the yards which built the old wooden keels. Recently saw something similar being used to drill out the tie-rod holes in wooden leeboards. And, by golly, the large ones would make beaut marlinespikes. Regards Ceeg

    Stopping smoking, anyone with me?

I am well over 7 months without my pipe and its getting that I don't recall the last time I had my pipe out for a looksee. Not Smoking dosn't really bother me... Except, for a few weeks quite recently, I was getting bothered from time to time, by a horrible sensation of burnt , stale...

    Hat help

There is yet another way which may just work, and its nothing to do with new wires or beeswax. You could try the method I use for hats which are just a bit too big. Tension... I'm talking about beefing up the stern section by adding a few rows of tight stitches. In a compatible colour, you...

    Hat help

Quite right too. To get the best effect, dip the whole brim, just rotate it slowly and then wheek it out. Probably need to get rid of the excess by wafting all over with the wifes hairdryer set high. Newspaper is your best pal. But dont be tempted to burnish or buff the rim, once dipped, or...

Show us your Bushcraft Hat (hopefully will end up pic heavy)

Send him somewhere East of Suez Where the best is like the worst... I dont know for absolute sure , but Cha Wallah's are pretty thin on the ground these days.\ It's just that hat...probably just uses it for going on the pith with. Ceeg llh

    The ultimate bunnet ;-)

Some bonnet. In an abeam wind of force 3, I reckon you would need an up wind heading of plus 50 degrees to counteract leeway. On the other hand, I think the same folk produce a sort of tabard, made from rattan, with huge pocket flaps which can be deployed outboard to act as leeboards. Ceeg

What needles for sewing heavy canvas and leather?

Firstly, mark out. Measure and mark it with a fine pencil, unless you have a wheel markers. The stitch you're using is ok if you have access to only one side, but you need a load of experience to do a neat job. The use of the round awl, will not slice through the yarns and leave all the edges...

What needles for sewing heavy canvas and leather?

Well, I sew heavy, heavy canvas quite regularly and initially I used the traditional kit of my seagoing days. It was all abit much and I found the best way to do seams in hard, hard canvas, was just to use a round awl in the same hand as the needle, but you have to be quick about it...dont use...

    so....who saw the mccullin documentary?

I thought it a most moving thing, noble and humane. I slept badly last night, being constantly poked by a full sense of empathy. We do so many beautiful and horrible things. Shabash, Mr. Mac. Ceeg

    Mick Aston - Time Team

He must have been a great tutor, he was always seemingly mad keen on his subject. I will certainly miss those Catweazel whiskers and the Bad Taste hats and ghanzi's. Ceeg

    Losing your best friend

Three and a half months since I lost my Lab and yesterday I got to scrat a retriever behind the lugs...still heartbreaking. I,ve got him under a patch of garden which is just showing its new seed. And he has got my summer gilet, my leather dogwalking hat, his "poorly "blanket and soft toys and...

    Including rope in your kit?

Always have either, a hank of B and Q green polly, or a dhoby line of braided jute or waxed cotton. In the event of storm moorings not needed, its handy to mess about making fancy knots. Ceeg

My tackle is old...but in lovely condition

I am missing quite a lot here, brains probably. How on earth is a fellah supposed to get a thimble in that block eye, without springing the thimble apart, threading it through and then bending it all back into shape before resplicing?...better to incorporate a shackle that fits tween thimble and...
