Whats The Best Bannock Recipe ??

You don't really need to cook it in anything... You can wrap the mix round a peeled hardwood stick and angle that over the fire, making sure you turn it regularly. Or you can make ash cakes, laying the straight on to the embers... ok it gets a bit burnt and ashy on the surface, but you just work...

What would the UK look like without all of the grazing sheep and crops?

On a visit back home last year I was struck by the extent of forestry there is now in Central Scotland... not just the spruces etc but there's obviously been a lot of planting of native trees along the M8 etc

a problem for u to solve

One thing you could be doing now is learning what you need from the tree and wild food books so you won't need to carry the books. Perhaps take a note book with your own notes and drawings of the key things you need to know.

Tracking course for bcuk members: 3rd - 8th October 2010

I'm afraid I must pull out from this, the NHS cuts are starting to bite and I think money's going to be tight(er) for the forseeable future. Sorry folks.

    stupid question of the day

You can get some idea of who made the path though. Badgers seem to be like miniature bulldozers so their paths tend to be wide and scraped clean, and they're happy to go straight up and down hills. Fox paths can be narrow and meandery, their long legs don't tend to disturb the grass so much.

    Pockets

I wear the Craghoppers Kiwi for work and find I use almost all of the 9 pockets without overloading. Mobile goes in the mobile pocket on the thigh, note pad and other paperwork in the thigh pocket itself, don't seem to use the zipped pocket on the outside of the thigh pocket. Wallet in the back...

Burdock in a field that was sprayed a few years ago

Good points, Robin. The fields have been abandoned for many years now, not grazed, cut or planted apart from the one in question which was planted the once three years ago. The rest of the fields are now filling up with willow, thistle, fireweed, teasel, etc and the occasional burnt-out car or...

Burdock in a field that was sprayed a few years ago

My patch includes lots of fields which have been left to go wild for at least the past 7 or 8 years. There's a great burdock patch in one of the fields, but a farmer sprayed and ploughed it three years ago to plant maize. The burdock has come back fine, but I've been unsure about using it in...

    Horseback Archery

Fantastic. I've become a fan of a writer called S. M. Stirling, and in ones of his series, Horse Archery, and the learning of it, is quite important. Loved the archers football match, and thought the target tossers had a lot of trust...

    Buzzard Wing Touching Display...picc heavy

This spring I saw two buzzards in territorial competition, actually locking talons together, spinning earthwards, crashing through the forest canopy and only releasing when they landed on the forest floor, only 10 to 15 metres away from me. Talk about jaw dropping. Of course camera wasn't with...

    HEADS UP!!! There's another disease!

Apparently it's endemic in rodent populations in some wilder parts of the USA. So you've got be careful out there. Hopefully one of our American friends can give more info on that. As for wiped out, you might be thinking of smallpox which is regarded by the WHO as having been eradicated in 1979.

Hexy burner as a wood stove

Even cheaper... 3 tent pegs will happily support a Crusader mug over a small fire. Of course that's only useful if you're able to build a fire on the ground, luck me, eh? I can see the wood stoves coming in useful in different circumstances but where I go out to play it's not a problem.

I'll probably be attending for a day or two, what time do things kick off?
