In Norway the peening of scythes hasn`t been done (or was uncommon) since late 18th century, when the smiths began making laminated blades. In the 60`s non laminated, mass produced blades was introduced, but the steel was of a type that was more suitable for sharpening on a stone, not peening.

We (at least northern norwegians) call it "Finnprimus".

Leather suits was used by fishermen for hundred of years. It is indications that they was used in early medieval times (aka viking age) as well. Here is a youtube video showing the garb and its making (norwegian only it seems).

They are as educated as any other living up here, and (at least in my country) have been for as long too. And They began using non biodegradables as soon as everyone else. They actually have no excuses for littering.

Some of the straws the Modern History guy collected looked like plain grass of some sort. This is Juncus effusus wich was used as a wick in oil/cod liver oil lamps here. And this is a pic of a straw and its marrow (the wick). In the old days it was the childrens job to "peel" the straws...
