I've got a Dutch army canteen and two canteen cups. I've also got a US army canteen and cup and issue canteen stove similar to those suggested above. While the Dutch cups are very similar to the American ones and you can make the canteen stove work, they don't fit together as nicely.
Blimey, that's me - must be a few years ago. Happy days! (Amazingly those trousers & jumper are still going strong as well, though the latter nabbed by Mrs DHD for allotment use!)
Looks brilliant! Is that where we were for those old Daniel Boone challenges? I can't remember if I did one or two of those; I do remember enjoying them though!
+1 for this idea by the way. I've added a bit of cord to the end of a loo brush with a couple of nuts (as in nuts n bolts) at the end. Makes a decent enough "pull through".
Or another option: get a lid made up for your mess tin. Have a look at woodlorien on eBay, which is where I got mine for a tenner or thereabouts (otherwise no connection).

For a stainless steel canteen, I'd recommend The Bushcraft Store's version. They do a nifty steel cup/cooking pot to go with it too: TBS Stainless Steel Water Bottle (No affiliation etc)
Here's a brand new video on this subject from Neil Andrews / Greencraft. He looks back at Lofty Wiseman's suggested survival kit approach from back in the day, and puts his own modern take on it. Worth a look I think.
I have no direct experience of the other two brands you mention, but can tell you that we've had a Klondyke for 3 years or so We are very happy with it. We've used it up to a fortnight at a time. It feels light and airy inside and is quite quick drying.
