If I understand the goretex fabric properties you need to build up heat to allow the water vapour to pass through the fabric. With a poncho open at the bottom it's not going to allow the build up of heat to pass through.

We did without a lot of things for centuries. Are we going back to nude foraging and hunting? They can be a great resource, assistance for walking and hills and can be used as support for tarps.
