    Chalwyn Storm Lanterns Lanterns

They are steel but were usually tin plated for protection. I generally use a brass brush to remove any loose rust and, if needed, I give it a soak in citric acid to shift anything deeper. https://www.steamtent.uk/html/restoring-a-rusty-lantern.html A quick coating of Waxoyl will then preserve...

    Chalwyn Storm Lanterns Lanterns

There is a good Gremlin on there at the moment. Good price and reasonable condition. Just needs a bit of cleaning up. I already have a good example of that type or I would have had it myself. eBay Link I have painted a few globes recently and some were Tropics. I've never been a fan of...

    Chalwyn Storm Lanterns Lanterns

Today I want to introduce you to the Chalwyn Tropic Mk.II, a classic British cold blast tubular lantern. Commonly called "Hurricane Lanterns" this is a design seen all over the World now. In the "Bushcraft" community, Feuerhand lanterns seem to dominate the market because they are still...

    A tool I don’t recognise.

Thank you Ceeg, that might explain the lack of the wedge which perplexed me.

    Trip report for Kittila 2023

I intend to go back to the Market again. Really enjoyed it both times although it will be strange making the trip without Damian. :-( I also want to do another Iceland tour but that too will be in the future.

What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

I have been guilty of checking in less than I used to. For a while the conversations started to be dominated by an individual that I didn’t much like and as people like me drifted away because of him, the place just wasn’t as interesting. Even when he had gone, there are only so many knife...

Can anyone recommend a good woodcarving set?

My most used tools are a set of four chip carving knives from Proops Bros in Sheffield. https://www.proopsbrothers.com/index.asp?function=search ( Type “Chip Carving” into the search ) Cheap, decent steel and easy to sharpen. Not the “best” or fanciest, certainly not the most expensive tools...

    A tool I don’t recognise.

A bit too small for that I think. There was a pack of very good sail needles, a turned needle case and what appears to be a belaying pin.

    A tool I don’t recognise.

A seam rubber was the only thing I came up with. The other thing it could be used for is wrapping line around for extra tension when whipping a rope end, but I usually do that with a Marlin Spike.

    A tool I don’t recognise.

I picked up a lot of sail making needles and a needle case from eBay and they came with this oddity at the bottom of the picture. No guarantee that it is connected but everything else in the lot seemed spot on. The Navy Marlin Spike is just for scale. Anyone recognise it?

Beard and long hair I guess. Most of us re-enactors resemble each other at a distance.

Sad news, RIP Ogri the Trog

Sad news indeed. Last saw him at the Bushmoot and as always he had time for one and all. A great loss.

In Praise of the BCUK Hammock.

It is still my hammock of choice when just using a tarp. Good bit of kit.

    A bit of Whittling

I usually use Rustins wood dyes. Dark Oak or something like that.

    A bit of Whittling

I’ve collected a few from all sorts of places. Most are usually described as chip carving knives but I find the shapes useful.
