    What did you buy today?

Soup yesterday and soup tomorrow! = one year. (I’m fascinated! What’s the shelf life after opening?)

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

What a pity that those with cars and vans, both within and beyond the affected area, don’t step in and help.

Yes indeed, we all judge each other and we all apply labels to each other - it’s impossible not to do so. Folk reading this post are assessing the writing and the writer and shifting their stored impression of something called Pattree. They are doing the same with all their perceptions all the...

    Any old iron?

OK. I thought, since the crystal structure is changing in Earth’s magnetic field it might augment demagnetisation. This clearly demonstrates the difference between information and knowledge :)

    Any old iron?

Thanks @Kepis This is exactly the kind of knife making that I need for the first attempt. Also, it will make a thin enough blade that it won’t affect future choices of blade material. Excellent! @Tengu I was wrong. I had no idea that the whole blade of a panel saw might be hardened!

    Any old iron?

More novice questions: 1. I’ve thought about rotating the blade in a mapp gas flame to get even heating. Might this also help the material to become paramagnetic? 2. Is bluebacking / colour running a partial anealing process? The blade blank is likely to be only: 90 x 25 x 2mm

    Any old iron?

While agreeing with you - it’s a bit late for the handle! (I have made them before.) Some time ago one of my daughters bought me a lump of Kingwood. I had no idea what it was but just knew it was very dense and beautifully if subtly grained. I’d already started to shape a handle before I...

We all have at least one self image, quite usually more. There exists a world for each of us in which we are the ubermensch, the super hero. I would never wish to damage someone else’s self image.

    Any old iron?

Maybe, later. One of the huge advantages of the knives that I enjoy using is that I can take one completely to pieces in less than thirty seconds. I can also change blades whenever I want. I’ll persevere with a piece of domestic iron and maybe make a better blade for it once I’ve done some...

    Luckily it’s not tipped.

    Any old iron?

What thickness? Probably too thin for a knife? Could it become a saw? Some warding files and a saw set (fine nosed pliers if that’s what you’ve got) might fix it. If the blade is shiny but the teeth are blackened then it’s probably laser hardened. Just the teeth are hardened. and the rest of...

Even densely populated areas can manage a week or two without rubbish collection. More than that an it gets messy. Maybe in an emergency we wouldn’t throw away so much. Sewage in the other hand might soon become difficult without a water supply. I have no idea what municipal planning exists...

    Any old iron?

Just to be clear, is the suggestion that I can cut out a blade from a circular saw (close to the edge) without any further heat treatment or that it just needs annealing? Thanks. @Stew Looks as if we cross posted. That would appear to be the answer! So: I’ll use the secateur blade if I can...

It’s not something that I think about. We’ve managed an eight day power cut here. I think that most of us have some form of store. It’s called a cupboard. Ours contains enough to make our meals for a week - that is to say, the meals that we have decided on. There are supplies that go well...

    Any old iron?

Right. My recent successful foray into knife handles has encouraged me to attempt my own locking folder from scratch. I appreciate that this is not the best knife for an absolute novice. Worse than that, I am determined to make it out of what I have here. Inevitably this is raising questions...
