Preparing for troubled times ahead - Advice on what is needed.....

I regularly live without mains water. You get to appreciate that water is heavy. When every litre is hand carried 800m you learn very quickly not to waste It. Learning to wash up and hand wash with minimal amounts. Most people have little idea of their water consumption.

    Hollow ground spoon knife

I would add my recommendation for Dave Budd. Based in Devon. He makes good tools that stay sharp.

Problem then is the high risk of dead fall putting you into a deep permanent sleep. Hammocks and tarps have their limitations too even in woodland.

    Lanshan 2 review (not mine)

My bush shelter was more like a scaled down version of a Baker Tent. the Nahanni deep canyons and gravel bars don’t lend themselves to this style of tent. Similarly the terrain i wilderness camp in mostly now Finland is rock with fewer options this style of tent. They have their admirers. I...

    Lanshan 2 review (not mine)

I used to have a green outdoor bush shelter. It used canoe paddles for poles and tension from the guys to stay up. On the South Nahanni it was absolutely the worst tent imaginable Endless flath trying to get the tension right with weighted rocks. I was always 20 minutes behind my colleagues...

    Getting wet in Winter

I much prefer winters in Finland. Cold and dry for the most part. Decent snow, frozen lakes to explore. here in Sussex it’s very wet currently 4-5C. I live a 2km for the sea. Rarely get snow. So winters are miserable with mud everywhere and a damp cold that’s just not fun.

    Getting wet in Winter

Last weekend we ran a Bushcraft skills course for youth leaders. The weather was miserable. Torrential rain and high winds. Of our eight clients 6 had some form of gear failure that meant they got wet during the night. One bailed out the others ploughed through with damp sleeping bags. 3...

    Floods Floods Glorious Floods

Locally almost every major road has some degree of flooding at the moment. I’m amazed at the lack of skills shown by the vast majority of folk driving in poor conditions. No idea how to handle understeer. (Front wheel Skidding). Absolutely no feel of the road and understanding where the deep...

    Getting wet in Winter

The weather is what the weather is. I’m out in all weathers. Running a Bushcraft school and managing woodland you get used to dealing with the conditions. I might change the method of what I’m doing but rarely the activity. Some times I move to an alternative location that is more sheltered...

If you had no ties and money wasn’t an issue, where would you move to?

If we had made a different choice to stay. I would be purchasing a house in Finnish Lapland.
