    Sorel boots - any good?

Sorel went from being a solid winter workbook to a ‘lifestyle/recreation’ boot. Columbia bought the company in 2000 and turned it into a fashion item. For winter I use the Nokian Naali. Minimum maintenance and a felt liner that can be taken out and dried. Not very fashionable as it’s a great...

Gorka 3 Russian Army Mountain Suit

The sso/sposn Gorka C is the best one to get. Mine has a better fabric and colour than the Bars one. It’s more green than brown and the fabric has a higher thread count, making it lighter and tougher. It also has the advantage of a Velcro fastened tunnel pocket on the lower back for storage of...

    Trusted military surplus suppliers?

Some Russian kit isn’t too bad either ‘Gorka Suits’ are really good for winter Bushcraft, especially the smock type. Grey Shop are good to deal with. A typical Gorka made by 4 Bars is £63 for smock and trousers, or the SSO/SPOSN one (in better fabric) is £83. Postage can be pricey, but not too...

    Bulletproof sleeping pad

I got mine from staying with a friends Sami relatives a few years ago. Reindeer hides are usually sold untreated or silicone treated. The untreated ones are raw hide on the side that lays on the ground. They can absorb water if not used in really cold (sub zero) or dry conditions. Silicone...

    Bulletproof sleeping pad

I like the Thermarest ridgerest, but the only problem I found with it was in winter. If you are not careful and get snow on it, it collects in the ridges and doesn’t brush off easily. The pockets of snow then melt under your sleeping bag during the night, making it damp.

    Bulletproof sleeping pad

If it literally has to be ‘bullet proof’, the Savotta military sleeping mat takes some beating. Priced around £55 it is closed cell foam encased in a nylon shell. The sleeping surface is slightly rubberised to stop you sliding off in the night. It also has ‘wings’ that fold out to become a...

    Winter glove ,which ?

Since the early 80’s I have used Dachstein mitts for winter mountaineering, climbing and general cold weather stuff. They are knitted into a large mitt and then boiled in oil to shrink them into a fairly wind proof item. My first pair were a fiver, they go for around £30 these days. My ex...
