Sorel went from being a solid winter workbook to a ‘lifestyle/recreation’ boot. Columbia bought the company in 2000 and turned it into a fashion item.
For winter I use the Nokian Naali. Minimum maintenance and a felt liner that can be taken out and dried. Not very fashionable as it’s a great...
The sso/sposn Gorka C is the best one to get. Mine has a better fabric and colour than the Bars one.
It’s more green than brown and the fabric has a higher thread count, making it lighter and tougher.
It also has the advantage of a Velcro fastened tunnel pocket on the lower back for storage of...
Some Russian kit isn’t too bad either ‘Gorka Suits’ are really good for winter Bushcraft, especially the smock type.
Grey Shop are good to deal with.
A typical Gorka made by 4 Bars is £63 for smock and trousers, or the SSO/SPOSN one (in better fabric) is £83. Postage can be pricey, but not too...

If it literally has to be ‘bullet proof’, the Savotta military sleeping mat takes some beating. Priced around £55 it is closed cell foam encased in a nylon shell. The sleeping surface is slightly rubberised to stop you sliding off in the night. It also has ‘wings’ that fold out to become a...

Since the early 80’s I have used Dachstein mitts for winter mountaineering, climbing and general cold weather stuff. They are knitted into a large mitt and then boiled in oil to shrink them into a fairly wind proof item. My first pair were a fiver, they go for around £30 these days. My ex...
