Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August) available until March 31st, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
The quickest way to reduce bulk and weight on a synthetic system would be to use a quilt rather than an enclosed sleeping bag as the Goretex bivy will keep drafts out anyway.
I do like a modular system though as it saves having loads of different sleeping bags/quilts ready for every possible...
@nomad64 while I agree there's definitely blurred lines as to promote British vs rest of first world I think (and this is my presumption) that rather than (just) local, people are often just wanting smaller, artisan maker's and smaller manufacturers where workers are cared for, products are...
Maybe we should have a naughty and saintly list of manufacturers that are UK, European, American and Japanese that are actually made in their original countries?
Montane boils my *#@! with loads of union jack flags and every stitch Chinese made. Disgustingly misleading in my view.
If it's nylon you can use an acid dye to dye the bags. I've used it on molle gear before and it worked pretty well but the threads, velcro and bits like that probably won't dye
@sundowner you can rig up a secondary hammock underneath your main hammock with bungees and a few clips into a sort of pseudo UQ with the blanket forming the insulation between the hammocks ie like a double layer but enough give so as not to squish the blanket too much. I slept in one like that...
I absolutely agree with @beachlover in that the 70l, huge, heavy packs are ridiculous for a young person and could really discourage them from future outdoor adventures. When I did mine 20 years ago, with ex military kit, I skipped loads of the kit on the list (mainly because I couldn't afford...
Long fuse and a decent chin. To get you card it's just a daft course then pay for the card itself, the pay isn't what it used to be so I no longer do the doors, but I quite liked it.
Another vote for underquilt or nothing when hammock camping, though I'm the cottage maker that @sunndog mentioned so somewhat biased. I'd only bring CCF pads if I was in mixed areas where Hammocks won't always be an option and I'll definitely be on the floor at some point: thick enough they'll...
I've had a fair few Dutch ovens and as long as the lid fits nice and tight the rest is just preference (although avoiding Chinese steel is good too). My favourite is a pyrex casserole/Dutch oven that was £3 on a car boot with a DIY brass hanging loop added. I've also an aluminium Jamaican style...
I've found hydrophobic down to clump much more than untreated, natural down, more of a problem in jackets that sleeping bags though. It's worth noting that wetting a quality down is much harder than you'd think as when I first started making quilts I thought adding damp down would be a bit...
I'd skip the stretchy nylon ridge-line as it isn't needed but just helps to get the correct sag and pitch angle that much easier. A structured ridge-line needs to dyneema or nothing IMO.
Your DD setup is fine, not the comfiest or lightest but hammocks are complex at first and a bit of...
Great video. He's braver that me, I only winged my Mora at one after it chewed my brand new Aarn pack! (for the record I'd have gladly killed everyone of his possum friends after that incident)
I'm not sure it's safe to eat Possum in NZ as they're heavily poisoned in an effort to try and wipe...
