A knife by any other name...

Hi Andy, I have a Falk. F1 and a Woodlore. The full convex grind of the F1 does slightly out perform the Woodlore for food prep., though it's not a big difference. I really like the F1 blade (solid VG10), takes and holds a good edge and has an excellent spine for fire steels and general...

    what did everyone think then?

Really enjoyed it! Now I remember why we have a telly :o): A particular moment of deep satisfaction was seeing Mr Mears hook the three fish using thorns. Only last weekend at the Wilderness Gathering we sat through a very 'dry' survival fishing course during which the instructor repeatedly...

    The (Wilderness) Gathering???

Useful - Lagavullin 16yrs :super: Stupid - Bell's :nono: Looking forward to bumping into you all. Jacky and meself will be the ones without tatoos. Traffic permitting, we should be there from Friday afternoon, staying till closing time (old habbits die hard).

My verdict...WS Micarta Vs BRKT Highland

.....or, given the circumstances, perhaps go for two WS micartas :naughty:

    Tents.

Just bought a Vaude Hogan MKII Light; that might be worth having a look at. Especially seeing as Field and Trek have them reduced to £220 in their latest 'sales' mailer. I don't have a great deal of experience with tents though spent hours researching this choice in advance. Everything...

    Leatherman Wave

 How old is your Wave, Bill? I've had a few variants of the Wave over the years and the four main blades locked on all of them. My most recent model (18 months) has the grooves cut into the serrated blade, which I agree is a great modification. Both saw and file lock on this one too.

    Secondary Bevel

Hi Viking, I hope this might be helpful to you: http://www.bushcraftuk.net/community/showthread.php?t=2432 I posted it a little bit late on your original thread and it looks like you might not have caught it.

    New knife!

Hi Viking, I own an Ornen and a Raven, both bought from Nordic Arts (great service). I thought it just worth mentioning that these knives each come with a small secondary bevel, rather than the single flat bevel of the Woodlore. On Ragweeds site, which is brilliant by the way, he mentions...

    Maglite LED

Hi Nick, Sadly, the Newbeam is only made to fit the AA minimag. Compatibility is related to the age of the mag, older models having a different switch unit: http://www.opalec.com/support.html As you'll see from this link and the one from Steven, fitting it is a breeze and you'll get 10 hours...

    Maglite LED

Hi Jim, That's as cheap as I've seen them. It's where I bought mine from, in fact and the service was good. As for whether they're worth it or not... :super: most definitely, especially if you already have a compatible Mag. I wouldn't hesitate to get another if I lost this one and certainly...

    Stoves

Hi Boaty, By coincidence, I've just been reading a chapter on stoves in Chris Townsend's book, Backpackers Handbook. He reckons the 60ml burner of a Trangia lasts for about 30 minutes which extrapolates to around 8 to 8 1/2 hours per litre (according to my maths), depending on conditions.

    GPS accuracy

Thanks Adi, I guess it must have been tne multipath problem. I was aware of the problem of travelling over a significant distance with the unit switched off and after allowing extra time it did give me a position out in the open (and Quincy Market, oddly)...just in amongst the buildings was a...

    GPS accuracy

Ive used a Garmin Etrex out and about for a while and found it pretty darn good down to 10 metres. When I took it on holiday to Boston to use in the city however, ...useless. Couldn't get a position due to all the skyscrapers :-? (I allowed for the fact that we'd travelled more than 500miles...

    Stoves

I also tend to switch between hex, trangia and a coleman butane catridge jobby. Has any one tried the variation on the stick tin can stove shown in Ray Mears' Bushcraft book, the one pictured with the wok, using charcoal as fuel? My one attempt last year failed miserably; seemed to take for...

    Advice on sharpening an axe

Hi Jason, I have one of the Wilkinson Sword/ Fiskars sports axes, medium size (inch or two shorter than a GB SFA I think). It came with a reasonable edge on it which turned into an absolute scorcher with a couple of passes on a 1200 grit watersone...shaving hairs and slicing paper as well as...

    Friction Firelighting

At last....managed to get a good coal using teasle hand drill. Swapped softer hearth boards for a hard piece of elder. :-D The elder provided much better resistance to the teasle generating plenty of heat and fine dust rather than crumbling away like the pine/willow boards.

    Useless kit

I'll stick in a vote for that reconstituted carpet fluff that most outdoor shops around these parts market as paracord. Have to agree Adi007 on the mags as well. They were great for their day...but so were spam and brinylon. For less than £20 you can have a dive rated PrincetonTec Tec...

    Friction Firelighting

Hi Justine, I've had similar frustations with Teasle...lots of smoke achieved quickly with both willow and pine hearths but never an ember. After much frustration I tried a piece of Teasel fastened into an electic drill and only after several attempts did it produce what was a very fragile...
