    Bow Making

Hi Stovie and Bushcraftsman, This is a great thread and I feel inspired to gives this a whirl. All seems clear except for one bit that I'm clearly not understanding as it seems like a contradiction. If the flat side is the back and the curved side the belly and you start by reducing the...

    Poll: EKA, Eggen or Fallkniven

If it's to be used for general bushcrafty type stuff, then of the three you mention I would plump for the Helle. If you want a Fallkniven of any kind I'd advise moving quickly and shop around. Their prices have just shot up. An F1 from Heinnie's is now just 5p short of £97. The TK4 is now...

    axe handle shape???

Coincidentally, not long since I read a chapter on the shape of axe handles in The Ax Book: The Lore and Science of the Woodcutter by D.Cook in which the author makes a convincing argument for the straight handle being preferable to the almost universally adopted s shape. The main reason being...

LED lihgt units for surefire 6p???

http://www.malkoffdevices.com/shop2/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_14&zenid=dfbdc8t2scpjt3shra1j4g6gc2omntv7 Although I haven't used one of these myself, these are very highly regarded by those that have on Candlepowerforums. Only draw back is that ordering from this side of the pond is...

    Fallkniven or Spyderco

The U2 is the one folder that I regret moving on. Great little knife that punches well above its weight. I can heartily recommend it.

Wide-fit hiking boots - recommendation please

I often have a problem with boots being too narrow. If you can find a shop that offers a good fitting service then that's obviously optimum. I tried a pair of Asolo boots a couple of months back and they were too wide at the front which I was most surprised at! Bought a pair of Scarpa Rangers...

    cracking striker

Which design did you go with? Coincidentally, I finally broke down and ordered 3 of Darrel's just this morning - Viking, Twisted Viking and a Dragon. This after stumbling across an old thread of Martyn's over on British Blades:) Glad to hear it's sparking well.

    'Legal' Bushcraft Knife?

I don't believe the words words 'hobby' or 'interest' have ever been in Section 139 of the CJA 1988 in any case : http://www.opsi.gov.uk/ACTS/acts1988/ukpga_19880033_en_14#pt11-pb3-l1g139 Of course that doesn't neccessarily mean they aren't valid reasons given the 'generality of clause 4'...

    firebow

Hi Chay, After posting about using ash as a spindle I happened across the old ash spindle I experimented with some time back. It's been sat in a drawer in my workshop for over a year (just a shade under 3/4 inch thick)! Anyway, I gave it a go with a willow hearth I've had for probably the same...

    firebow

Hi Chay, Welcome to BCUK! Willow makes a great hearth board but you may find progress a little easier with a different spindle, say, hazel, willow, sycamore or lime for example. I'm not going to say the ash spindle won't work because the condition of the wood used can often be more important...

    Mors Kochanski bow drill techniques

Thanks to everyone that has cotributed thus far. In a 'misery-loves-company' kinda way I'm glad to see it's not just me that finds Mors' techniques tricky to get the hang of compared to the 'notch out of the side' method :D As mentioned by a few people there is an obvious advantage to these...

    Mors Kochanski bow drill techniques

As promised, here’s a pic of the two embers that formed during my latest attempt at the two stick hearth method. The two sticks are lime and were picked up from a pile of coppiced branches and left for about a week in my workshop to dry out. They are just over thumb thickness. I used a hazel...

    Mors Kochanski bow drill techniques

Heh....I'm back! Thanks Timon :You_Rock_ Thanks also to everyone else who helped get me back able to post again :grouphug: In the meantime I did manage to get a couple of embers using the two sticks bound together method (without having to turn them over and drill back through). I took...

    Mors Kochanski bow drill techniques

Having learnt to use the bow drill with a 'standard' hearth ie drill in single depression with notch cut out of side I have started dabbling with some of the alternative methods shown in Mors' book. I've managed to get an ember using the two intersecting holes technique but not with the two...

    smoke but no fire

Hi wilekayote, Voivode is right about the resin in the wood. When you stopped drilling, the resin cooled and formed a thin glaze over the surfaces. You may be able to get round this by sprinkling a little sand into the depression in the hearthboard and starting to drill again :)

    Everday non-locking folder?

Another vote for the Vic Farmer despite it's bulkiness.....though I'm all anticipation for Fallk's non-locking version of the U2 :red:
