Merry ChristmasGuest, we hope that you have a great day wherever you are, and we're looking forward to hearing of your adventures in the New Year!
Hi H-H,
Did things resolve themselves with the Old Tool Store? I haven't been in for a good while now but when I fist visited Ray was great. Very generous with his time. Others that I know have had similar experiences.
Hope all ended well.
Cheers,
Dave
I have a 330 one and it is a fantastic cutter. The only minor downside can be using it to make an accurate gob cut; the curvature of the blade makes it trickier to get everything to meet at the right time and place, as it were. By no means insurmountable but if you intend doing lots of that then...
Thanks for all the advice on the tapering. I guess this applies equally to the section of the tang that tapers from spine to edge ie has to be levelled along two axis. Should be fun. :D
Ok, finally managed to get a large lump of kiln dried American black walnut.
From having a read around the net, it seems loveless bolts and epoxy are the best option for attaching scales. The only issue is the existing holes in the tang are a much larger diameter than the bolts available...
Bit of an old thread, I know but this is the only reference I've found to the dangers of the steel beads in the rim despite all the recommendations in books and across the web for this otherwise splendid technique.
I noticed the edge of my maul was looking rather the worse for wear after an...
Hi Broch,
That's an interesting piece. It may indeed have been a carpenters box but speaking as a traditional signwriter, that looks like an old signwriter's kit box. Drawers for brushes etc with the space underneath for pots of paint. Ought to be signs of paint in the grain if so. Just a...
Good point. I know that a couple of re-enactment groups have used the castle grounds to camp in overnight and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Glad you had a good time. The steampunk festival is one of the year's highlights here in Lincoln. Brilliant to see so much creativity and good humour.
Hi Wayland,
Just wondering if you were in Lincoln this weekend? Fantastic Steampunk gathering,; some amazing gear on show. Seemed to be the busiest year yet.
Nice job on the chest.☺
Hi Stew,
I've had a quick file of the tang which has worked well and I'm pretty much sorted on the shape of everything. Watched several videos which have been a big help but seem to be a bit stuck with sourcing interesting woods in suitable sizes. The flared butt and over all length, given I am...
I'll have a search for some, cheers.
If anyone has a link for fitting scales to a tang that tapers top to bottom as well as back to front that would be extra handy too:o
Like the reasoning on full tang first:D
I haven't got anything specific in mind yet for the wood. Something dark I think but with some nice pattern to it. Maybe some kind of burl. Are their any I should avoid due to being tricky to work? Or maybe quicker to ask what you might recommend? The...
Ok. Decision made! Full tang it is. No bolster or guard though, just a nice bit of wood and someliners.
Thanks to all that have helped so far especially Stew.
Hi Stew,
I'm torn now. Stick tang is closer to my limited comfort zone having put handles on billhooks and fitting a guard would be easier.
Still, nice scales with liners and some attractive bolts has a strong pull too. Haven't done a full tang handle before and wondering how I would manage...
Hi James,
Welcome to BCUK.
Apologies, I seem to have woken up with my pedant's hat on this morning. Whilst I entirely agree with the sensible precautions outlined by underground, I think it's important to be clear that the act of keeping them hidden in a rucksack doesn't technically keep you...
Hi,
There are many theories for the 'cho'...some more outlandish than others. From my research a few years back the most common and plausible suggestion was that it is purely religious symbolism.
Cheers.
