    Fids and Marlin Spikes

There is a limit with most Crafts on the amount of things you can make isn't there? One of the reasons I got into living history was looking at the hand made world these people were creating for themselves. It seemed like an infinite supply of projects back then but even that is starting to run...

I think Colin thought it was disqualified because of the 2017 date. I might be wrong but I thought that you had confirmed that. I realise now that you were working on the reason that it did not show a camp even though it was taken at the Moot. All working at cross purposes I think.

Nothing wrong with collecting if that is all you are doing. My objection, if you would call it that, is that a huge number of punters feel they need to fork out hundreds for knives, that are not ideal, simply because Mr Mears says that is what they need. It's a racket in my opinion and...

He could market a butter knife and people would still rush out to buy it. It's crazy in my opinion but what do I know. I look at the knives that craftsmen use, I look at the knives that have survived through archeaology and in museums and I see thin blades. RM has always had this obsession...

C'mon folks, I've seen some great shots taken at the Moots. Isn't anybody else going to enter this one?

Only just seen this post. Just what the World really needs, another crowbar with an edge. All my most useful knives are thin profiled, if I need a splitting wedge I'll pick up an axe or a bill hook... I also want a tool I'm not afraid of using. This is just another peice of male jewellery...

The Steam Tent Co-operative at the Wilderness Gathering

Nice to meet up with some former members of this parish. There were quite a few members there that don't really post any more. I guess other forms of social media have taken over a bit now.

I think it caught quite a few peoples imagination to be honest. I think the main thing holding people back, quite understandably, is the inevitable work, transport and storage that it all requires.

    What did you buy today?

The fuel can is sound, no leaks found and still has original seal. The fire extinguisher works ( With water not Carbon Tetrachloride I hasten to add. ) The power supply is stable on all voltages and I'm just trying to work out the very complicated burner mechanism on the lamp but it all seems to...

    What did you buy today?

Dropped into a boot sale today. First one in almost two years. Came away with a fuel can, a couple of bridles to scrap for the brassware, A Brady Gunslip, an old fire extinguisher, a bench power supply, a couple of thermometers in wooden cases, a couple of old tins and a nice old oil lamp. Not...

    Austism spectrum

I take for granted many of my craft skills. They just seem to come naturally to me. One thing they all have in common though is my attention to detail and I think that is definitely part of my wiring.

Oddly enough, the Swedish Fid is not in that picture because it lives in the Ditty Box but I tend to use one of the Selma Fids, on the left, for the same job.

    Fids and Marlin Spikes

While packing kit away after the Wilderness Gathering, including a "new" vintage Marlin Spike, second from the right, it occurred to me that I have a few of these tools now and I think they are greatly underrated by landsmen. I have lost count of the number of times one of these tools, drawn...
