Anyone Tried Waxing a Combat Jacket?

Mine are great when I am walking the dog - the Border has now become the de facto winter 'talk him for a walk' jacket - especially with the liner. But thats because I am not walking all that far, and I need something that will stand up to punishment when I have to find the dog when he refuses to...

Anyone Tried Waxing a Combat Jacket?

You've been pretty lucky. The average price for an original seems to be £50 plus, and not all them are in the UK, so you have to think about shipping. If you love yours as it is, then don't bother too much with the waxing - it's just not worth the hassle.

Anyone Tried Waxing a Combat Jacket?

Please please don't try waxing an M65, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, an original M65 is potentially pretty rare and expensive - they are very much collector's items and go for big bucks (I still regret not buying an original with badges in a N.Y. thrift shop back in 1990 - there were loads...

So, shell sorted. Next is the down. What do you suggest?

The mesh thing sounds interesting, although I did think about those old 'space age' reflective sleeping bags from years back! Thinking about it, the Ramche, the Rab Zero and other similar ones are in many ways 'superlight', as you say, but look like midweight jackets, but are pushing to perform...

So, shell sorted. Next is the down. What do you suggest?

I was looking at another Berghaus jacket with the reflective mesh - have you noticed any difference? In many ways, the Ramche seems a similar philosphy to the Zero - high fill power and very lightweight fabric. Looking the UltraLightOutdoor website, there are a number like them.

So, shell sorted. Next is the down. What do you suggest?

The Ran Zero is an amazing jacket, but it's very specialist with weight/bulk reduction being absolute. It's basically a really warm mid weight alpine jacket, but it's actually lighter than my ME Arete. It does that in the classic way of you can have it cheap, you can have it durable, you can...

    Insulated jacket recommendations?

You might do well at that price, especially on sale or from Ebay, in Mountain Equipment, Rab, Berghaus or Montane. It depends on how heavy/warm you want the jacket, because relatively heavy weight synthetic jackets are not that popular, and of course down, even with a dwr shell, isnt that great...

    Alpkit drybags WARNING.

'I own Ortlieb bags from the 90's which are still fine. But well: Ortlieb produces in Germany!!!' Much as I like Alpkit's Airloks (mine have been fine, and not much different from the Lowe Alpine and Podsac ones I also have), I tend to go for their Xtra's. Only a couple of quid more, but much...

Can anyone id my sleeping bag? (so I know it's rating)

DWR and damp resitant down will only get you so far - so its fine in a sleeping bag when it gets a bit of rain or snow on it, and again, my Mountain Equipment Lightline has Drilite fabric, which water resistant (I got caught in rain wearing it, and yes, it beaded pretty well). but my Arete has...

Can anyone id my sleeping bag? (so I know it's rating)

Thanks to hydropobic down and DWR shells. the idea that you have to be super careful with down is much less of an issue than it used to be, and frankly, I get the impression that a lot of the people who bought synthetic because of that advice tend to stick to it because it justifies what they...

Can anyone id my sleeping bag? (so I know it's rating)

Synthetic doesnt like being compressed in storage, even less than down (which will spring back with a proper wash, etc). I have never left either my synthetic or my down bags in their stuff sacks for storage - it just kills their loft. its really easy to just put them in a large sack for...

    Alternative to Craghopper winter trousers?

I have to admit to never bothering to use my winter Craghoppers - I just find them itchy and uncomfortable. Instead, Aldi do a 'winter hiking' trouser a couple of times a year on special purchase, which are fantastic. Water resistant, comfortable lining, and actually not too hot to wear in the...

    Free tents and other equipment

Millets will do a two person tent for 25 quid, often a popup (and we know just how much fun they are to get back in the bag). And once people have put mud all over it, plus the normal detritus of living in one for a couple of days, plus the distinct possibility that its chucked it down with rain...

    Free tents and other equipment

I understand that one of the big problems with clearing sites is the metal tent pegs left behind - since at Glastonbury much of the site is normally used for grazing, it can be very dangerous for the livestock. There seems to be different ways that kit gets salvaged or reused at different...

    Storing equipment

No, never. Its kills the loft, and thats essentially whats keeping you warm, and what you've paid for. A big stuff sack (or, as the author of Dont Forget the Duct Tap says, even just a large old pillow case) will be fine. A decent brand sleeping bag might even come with their own storage bag...

    Going Lighter....

It's certainly the thing that strikes me when reading comments about kit on this website, as opposed to hiking ones. Yes, there are people who like old school packs, canvas tents, etc, but must hikers are really into trimming weight, even if they are not gram counters. You would never see...

    Robin Hood - Origins

To be fair, films in Hollywood have always been made, to some extent, by committee. If you look at the hoops and hassle writers and directors had to go through during the studio period and beyond to get a film made, your amazed any interesting got done at all. The idea of the auteur has...

    Robin Hood - Origins

Not another one - Robin Hood has been redone so often I did start to wonder what they can say now. As for authenticity, since it's likely Hood never actually existed, it's something of a free for all. And what you tend to find is that money is spent on stunts, boasting about how authentic the...

    Looking for a light rucksack

It's Mounatin Warehouse - avoid like the plague. I note that it was supposedly originally £95 (Which would make it more expensive than an Osprey Talon!), but is now half price. Usual ME nonsense - the price was always supposed to be what they are charging. Osprey is the best bet, and it's...

    TNX Cats Meow at TKMaxx

I just had a look around my local TKMaxx, and spotted some loose bagged sleeping bags. You tend to get the cheapo Yellowstone ones and perhaps Trespass in there, but there were 3 TNX Cats Meow 3 season sleeping bags! They are well thought of in the States, and are a classic 3 season synthetic...
