    Men of Inspiration

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Owl Reading a selection of his writing. Some really inspiring stuff (and some more "interesting" ideas on racial stereotypes, but not the focus of my reading). His early conservation efforts are inspiring and still relevant, plus he has some great stories...

    Puritab quick question.

Army surplus Crusader bottles are 1l, strong and cheap. If you're not looking to boil them, then they are more than adequate + you can stack a metal cup and lid with them in a cheap and easy to find pouch (with a wee pocket for your puritabs!). My bottles are older than I care to admit but...

    Traveling

When I lived in BC, my best mate and I spent a day carefully navigating through hilly second growth to find a fishing spot that we had heard about. Neither of us was new to bushwacking and we'd both spent several years getting to know the particular area as hikers, fishers and paddlers. After...

    Traveling

If you're looking for some inspiration before you can wander freely, there's part of one of Grey Owl's books that addresses being lost in the forests of north Ontario. "The Men of the Last Frontier" is an entertaining read, albeit a bit "purple" at times. That said, I'm really enjoying...

So can we go camping ? Scotland.

Please DON'T head north from south of the Wall yet. If you're resident in Scotland, please be sensible and follow the current restrictions so that you don't put unnecessary pressure on the emergency services. As has been said, Raigmore and Dr Grey's have very limited facilities that should be...

Wood stove chimney-mounted water boiler - insights?

Greetings all. I have a Robens Kobuk stove for my tipi tent and am very pleased with it. I'm considering buying a water heater that wraps round the flue/chimney as a way to free up stove space for cooking as I'm finding that a kettle and a pan are all I can safely fit on top. Does anyone have...

    Trade Kettle.

I think I'm right in saying that Wayland of this parish - sorry, only know nom de guerre - discusses the etymology of kettle either on his website or on an earlier thread. "Kettle" as open pot rather than enclosed, spouted object was, IF I'm right, the older term for a cooking pot.

Black Robe is available on YouTube. The canoe sequences are an added bonus to an enjoyable film that looks at the early colonisation of Canada.

    Bivvy Bags...worth it?

I usually air my kit while I'm sorting out the morning, but on wet days I will stuff the sleep system (minus pad) into a bag. My zipless bivvi was sold as SF - but it may have been mid-labelled. Can't say I'm really concerned. Thanks for posting Kirtley's comments.

    Bivvy Bags...worth it?

Great discussion to read over breakfast. Thanks for sharing everyone. I know it's a heavy option, but I like a tarp & bivvi bag combo. Someone noted that Paul Kirtley suggested Snugpak + down bag to reduce weight: I have used that a lot, including in winter. When I first received the Snugpak...

Wishing we could go back to the good ol days.

Once Scotland eases the restrictions I plan to do the things I've thought about but not done - suddenly time seems more precious and employment may have disappeared for a while at least so I want to make more of the opportunities in nature. Following the Tolkien quote, above, from Mr...

    Dog bowl stove

That looks like a very nice job - thanks for sharing. Re dog bowls, I have a set of large ones (c. 2 l capacity) that I use for mixing bowls with Scouts - they replaced the Tesco plastic ones that only lasted a couple of days at camp while teaching bread making. The metal bowls won't break and...

Folding saw - cheap might not get much use

For a starter saw that may not get much use, I've found the Lidl / Aldi c.£3 versions ok. I have 6 I let Scouts use and they've survived a summer camp and other training use. They are starting to show wear and tear much more than my 7 year old Laplander but they cost a lot less.
