Ration Packs - What's Your Favourite?

Tin of sausages covered in lard, fry up the sausages and bacon grill + eggs in the grease from the tin, serve with beans + brown sauce in a mess tin, brew in the mug and scoff it all in the lashing rain, with your top bent over covering the mess tin from flooding. The new "cheese" in the packs...

Wool blanket or synthetic fleece blanket

If your set on taking blankets then I would definitely go for fleece, a wool blanket will triple in weight when wet and wont dry, fleece can be rung out relatively easily, fleece will keep you just as warm and will insulate well when wet (although not nearly as well as a dry blanket. Personally...

Ration Packs - What's Your Favourite?

I think the latest version of rat packs are absolute dog toffee. Meat sticks and rice anyone? Far too much fish and vegetarian stuff (in the standard packs) the soups now come in a pouch ready made but aren't that filling and would be better taken up with something else. The deserts are now...

    Gas stove query

Decathlon sell gen jetboils for £60, used to be they were hard to find for less than £90-£100 The old alpkit version is excellent and mine is still going strong, not sure about the newer types though. A few i work with use the MSR version (think theres 2 types of them) and they're also very...

    proofing nubuck boots

If you dont care to keep the look use grangers g-wax on them to waterproof the leather. You could go over the boots with a wire brush after letting it dry in to bring the nap up a bit, bit it'll darken them a good bit. I use it on lowa dessies and the leather is still in very good shape. Tonyuk

    Buffalo idea?

The idea of buffalo is that you wear it as a single layer next to the skin, nothing on underneath. The pile then wicks the sweat off of the skin and towards the pertex. The pertex spreads the water about over a large surface area, meaning it drys fast. Its the tips of the pile that make the most...

    Alt-berg civilian vs military boots

I have a pair of altberg tabbing boots as well as the defenders. The tabbing boots are like trainers once broken in, easily as comfortable as most fabric sided boots. Wouldn't wear them with much weight on my back however, especially if your used to more supportive boots. Also the fit is a...

    Worst case scenario

A lot of comments for something so basic, the guy was only showing that he was planning to carry a whistle, cylume, torch, gloves, bandage and a cat. Most of you will carry far more first aid stuff than that for a weekend in the ulu and think nothing of it, strange. If he wants to carry it then...

    Worst case scenario

There's nothing wrong with carrying a bit of first aid kit on your person at times, absolutely nothing walting about it. If you look at the kit its extremely basic, and if a wound is bad enough to need a tourniquet on then it needs to be put on asap. No point in messing about with "Just wait for...

    Worst case scenario

Seems like a decent kit, just make sure you keep it on your person. More than likely in the event of a blast you'll be separated from any cases and luggage and time spent looking for them would be better spent being the first to the exit. Tonyuk

A bit of market research for item of kit or supplies that tourists may want to buy?

Dioralyte, loperamide tablets, painkillers, mossi repellent and nets, hydrocortisone cream, good sun cream, aftersun, plasters + anti-septic. I'm not a fan of cheap gifts to take home, maybe some photo frames or mugs etc.. Tonyuk
