WWII British Army String Vest…how were they originally worn?

We wore them next to the skin in Belize, they stopped the damp shirts from clinging to the skin.

    I need a new thermos.

Depends on what your planning to use it for; Walking about between brewing up - Lifeventure thermal mug with the screw top Day out with a pack - Stanley 1 litre job Camping with a car etc.. - Thermos 2 litre glass job I've found that the glass flasks hold the heat in better than the steel...

    army surplus...the bits I use

The new issue lightweight waterproofs are great, however they're not meant to be used as a full on outer layer, they lack pockets etc.. making them more of just a cover for when its lashing down. If your wanting something to wear for the best part of a day then look into a decent waterproof...

    LIGHTWEIGHT WINDPROOF COTTON SMOCK/JACKET

I have one of those Varusteleka smocks in black. I think its decent as an outer working layer and its seen a fair bit of use since it arrived, far too warm to wear at the moment however. If you want something more substantial buy a old dessie smock and dye it.

    Stupidly Simple Bug Oil

Never heard of it, interesting to see its reviews. I use smidge up here, along with 3m's ultrathon which seem to help. Sometimes however theres nothing that beats a proper headnet etc.. especially when they're thick like a cloud. A diet strong in anti-histamines keeps the itching away.

    Buying First Aid kit components

With the heat we're getting i'd stick a couple of sachets of dioralyte in, they call for 1 per 200ml of water but i have it a bit weaker unless im in clip. Otherwise the standard kit should do. Painkillers, blister kit, crepe bandage, couple of different sized plasters, zinc oxide tape etc.. A...

    Athlete's Foot

Soak them in water with a bit of potassium permanganate. It'll turn your nails brown and give a tan look to the skin but it'll kill anything cheesy dead in short order. Air them out whenever possible, powder them regularly, stuff like mycil is good.

    Polyester baselayer

Screwfix sell helly long sleeve thermals for about £10-15 but only in black im sure. The same as the lifas but no stripes, they're good. Decathalon also sell good ones for cheap.

    All socks are not equal.

Smartwools, and powder your feet often to keep moisture down. Don't lace too tight.

    PLCE Bergan mods?

I used jayjays for mine, all i had done was the shoulder straps widened and padded a bit. Issue bergens aren't really designed to work without belt kit, i'd invest in a proper civvy pack with a padded waist belt. If you can get one with a semi-frame the makes a bit of room between the back of...

    Modern British army clothing

I don't think any of it is that bad anymore, compared to what was issued when i joined (80's) New smocks and proper windproofs, dry quick, handwarmers, covered buttons and the mesh is now gone back to standard fabric. You'd pay SASS £100+ for a smock like that back in the day Daft cotton...

    Veganism, Vegeterianism, Omnivorism

If vegans, vegetarians, etc.. don't wan't to eat meat then fair enough, but there's no way i would give up eating meat. Both for flavour and the nutrition it gives.

I search for the correct way to put on the GS MK2 gaiters

I had mine with the cord through one eyelet, tie a knot at the end so it cant thread all the way through. Pass it back and forward between the opposite side a few times then when your on the last eyelet thread on one of those cord lock adjusters, that way you can tighten and loosen it easily...

    MTP Smock, water beading.

The new smocks have fabric instead of the mesh, and zips on the handwarmer pockets, the fleece is also a bit lighter. Much better than the first 2 types.

    Desert Shirts

The old jungle kit was fantastic, we used to wear it back here in the summer when it was roasting, the colours were a bit brighter though. The first pattern dessie kit was also good but wore through quickly, especially the trousers, whereas the shirts would wear through overtime wherever the...

    Nisbets Gel fuel review

I find it burns much better out of the tin, i'm sure there's water added to the fuel to cool the burn since it burns with a very wet flame for the first minute or so (when out the tin) Those tins are great though for heating canned foods up in the swedish stove, i use that set-up often for...
