If you want comfort the the Dirtbag by alpkit is the thickest mat i've seen and the best i've used, excellent in winter; https://www.alpkit.com/products/dirtbag On sale for less than £50 at the moment. The issue 3/4 length mats are fine and i'm still on my original. It doesn't fully inflate...

First bushcraft course kit recommendations - Woodland Ways survival week March

Bivvy bag - The issue one is fine, and available for around £20-30 Sleeping bag - Again you can get one of the older issue bags for around £20. You'll not be cold in it but is is a bit bulky. The latest issue bag is probably more like £60-ish. If you go for the new style get a large size (200)...

Dartmoor knife survival kit contents, help wanted.

A big knife wont do sod-all for the majority of people. You can get a full on machete for less than that knife. I carry a mora and a fiskars folding saw. Sometimes a hatchet (also fiskars). A warm jacket, waterproof, fully charged mobile, map, compass, waterbottle and a few steritabs, decent...

Time has value. You've obviously been looking into this for a fair bit, i would just pay the £30, be done with it and move on with life.

Dartmoor knife survival kit contents, help wanted.

You'd be surprised. Depending on where you go you can be as a little as a day's walk from a village/farm/town. However that is all dependant on how fast your able to move, what the weather conditions are like, and if you can actually navigate. I'm always surprised by the number of people...

    HILLTREK VENTILE

Never liked ventile myself. Single layers of it still let dampness in and it goes very stiff when soaked. Heavy too.

    Favourite canned

Lidl do a tin of chopped pork and ham. Its the same size/shape and basically the same flavour as their bacon grill but has a higher meat content. Same price too i'm sure. Tinned fruit and tinned condensed milk, served with hot chocolate is a fantastic desert.

Buffalo tops - what's each one good for?

The pile isn't actually that thick, more like a heavy medium thickness. Its not actually that warm, compared to a proper insulated jacket. You'll find it excellent for physical activity in the cold, but you really need another layer when standing still.

    New Meals...

Slow cooker shin of beef stew with carrots, potatoes, onion, celery and turnip. Add some dumplings in near the end, then when the dumplings are "cooked" taking the pot part of the slow cooker out and place in a hot oven to crisp the top of the dumplings a bit.

    snugpak quality?

The stitching on mine (sj6) was starting to unravel straight from taking it out the bag, a lot of it is just single stitching also. The hood is pointless, fits skin tight and provides no real insulation, makes the collar stiffer, its only attached by about 2 inches of stitching at the back...

    Walking Wellies?

Forget wellies, get a good pair of high leather boots imo. You can go the route of surplus and get a pair of the current karrimor cold weather bots etc.. for cheap enough on ebay. Pair with a good sock and insole and i bet they'll be warmer and more comfortable than wellies...

Buffalo tops - what's each one good for?

I've only ever used their special 6 and the trousers. The special 6 is warm enough, cut relatively well and pretty durable. Not as warm as a synthetic filled shirt. The collar gets thinned out pretty quick and the pile in the elbows will pack down soon-ish. A pain to get on and off quick unless...

Anyone Tried Waxing a Combat Jacket?

I wouldnt walk any real distance in a waxed combat jacket. Waxed cotton holds sweat in like nothing else and always feels cold to the touch.

    Beginners Dutch oven recipes

100% a curry, something meaty and spicy. I prefer lighter acidic curries to creamy ones myself. A hot bowl of curry with rice (or cous cous) is fantastic under the tarp at this time of year. Brew of some sort to go with.

    Insulated jacket recommendations?

Take a drive over to Decathalon and have a look in there, you can find decent warm coats for around £50 easy. If its for insulation at stops i definitely recommend some form of synthetic insulation, primaloft etc.. There isn't such a thing as a perfect jacket for all weather, however for me...
