    Daypack contents

For a walk in lowland Britain I'll normally carry: Water Map Delorme Inreach Torch EDC Knife (Svord Peasant Mini) EDC Fire kit Space blanket Phone In winter I may add a Paramo Torres jacket to the pack. Everything bar the water actually fits in my pockets, tho my day pack is usually...

Gear for a 21 plus mile night backpack jog.

Impressive. The last couple of weeks I've cycled home from college, rather than catching the train. This means that instead of doing the 9km ride to the station, I did the 63km ride home, including climbing the Green sand ridge, and the North Downs. Takes me about 5 hours, tho only about 4 hours...

A Good Friday for a walk (North Downs Way section hike)

I use Viewranger on my phone, but as phone signal is pretty poor, I invested in an inreach device. As for yew tree, well last time I did, it wasn't the greatest night's sleep... J

    Knife laws in Europe

I don't know if my memory is failing me, but I think I started a thread on what you could carry in what countries. Might be worth adding to that thread (maybe make it sticky). And if my memory has failed me completely, perhaps we should have a sticky thread on what you can and can't have in...

A Good Friday for a walk (North Downs Way section hike)

That rare confluence of a British bank holiday and a good weather forecast offered an opportunity that seemed to be too good to miss. In particular the forecast showed a promise of a relatively warm night time temperatures (over 5°C). This seemed like a good chance to put the winter sleeping bag...

    Bark containers

I want to have a go at making a bark container, but all the birch round here doesn't seem to yield usable bark. What other barks native to Kent could I use to make a simple bark container? Cheers J

    Lightweight 2.5x2.5 tarp?

If you can't find it off the peg, you may find one of the smaller cottage manufacturers can do you a custom job. If you do find a 2.5m square tarp in sil nylon, let me know, I'm interested in one too... J

    tarp poles?

When cycling I still use my walking poles as tarp poles. Alternatively if weight is an issue, you can buy the poles that Luxe use on their shelters separately. They very light, but perhaps not the cheapest on the market. J

In the market for a brew/cooking kit

The lixada copy of the emberlit stove looks very similar to the Pocket stove by Bob Backpackinglight. I would venture that his is more versatile (it'll work with a trangia burner for example). As well as supporting a British company. Its worth noting that Bob the designer is a forum member...

In the market for a brew/cooking kit

I've got one of the lixada wood gas stoves. I would say it's a bit of a faff to use, you have to make sure your wood is quite small (in length), and the balance point between feeding enough in to keep it going, whilst not smothering it nor starving it is quite a fine line. J

In the market for a brew/cooking kit

That ezystove is 2.8kg. My overnighter kit weighs less than that... I would look at the Honey stove or Pocket stove by Backpackinglight. Both are light, stable, and burn wood, and you can burn meths either with a trangia burner, or a lighter (and cheaper) zelph starlyte burner. J

    20 year old OS maps...

Not all Forestry commission land is access land. What's the grid reference of the area you're looking at? Btw, dash4it.co.uk are very cheap for maps, and bloomin' quick too. No connection other than happy customer. J

    Firebox cube stove

15oz is rather heavy, over 400g. There are much lighter options... Would a pocket stove or honey stove not be a better option? J

    20 year old OS maps...

Access land didn't exist in 1995, so it's no surprise that it isn't on the map then. I would personally suggest that any map should be be as recent as you can justify. I once tried to cycle from London to Canterbury, I had a map, and I followed it some of the way out of London before realising...

    First Orchid

Was out at the weekend doing a section of the North Downs Way. As I entered an area of Downland near Folkestone I came across 3 blokes, 2 with cameras and one with a clipboard. I said hello and asked if they were a photography group (I had my own camera in my hands). The guy with the clipboard...
