    The ultimate bunnet ;-)

Some bonnet. In an abeam wind of force 3, I reckon you would need an up wind heading of plus 50 degrees to counteract leeway. On the other hand, I think the same folk produce a sort of tabard, made from rattan, with huge pocket flaps which can be deployed outboard to act as leeboards. Ceeg

What needles for sewing heavy canvas and leather?

Firstly, mark out. Measure and mark it with a fine pencil, unless you have a wheel markers. The stitch you're using is ok if you have access to only one side, but you need a load of experience to do a neat job. The use of the round awl, will not slice through the yarns and leave all the edges...

What needles for sewing heavy canvas and leather?

Well, I sew heavy, heavy canvas quite regularly and initially I used the traditional kit of my seagoing days. It was all abit much and I found the best way to do seams in hard, hard canvas, was just to use a round awl in the same hand as the needle, but you have to be quick about it...dont use...

    so....who saw the mccullin documentary?

I thought it a most moving thing, noble and humane. I slept badly last night, being constantly poked by a full sense of empathy. We do so many beautiful and horrible things. Shabash, Mr. Mac. Ceeg

    Mick Aston - Time Team

He must have been a great tutor, he was always seemingly mad keen on his subject. I will certainly miss those Catweazel whiskers and the Bad Taste hats and ghanzi's. Ceeg

    Losing your best friend

Three and a half months since I lost my Lab and yesterday I got to scrat a retriever behind the lugs...still heartbreaking. I,ve got him under a patch of garden which is just showing its new seed. And he has got my summer gilet, my leather dogwalking hat, his "poorly "blanket and soft toys and...

    Including rope in your kit?

Always have either, a hank of B and Q green polly, or a dhoby line of braided jute or waxed cotton. In the event of storm moorings not needed, its handy to mess about making fancy knots. Ceeg

My tackle is old...but in lovely condition

I am missing quite a lot here, brains probably. How on earth is a fellah supposed to get a thimble in that block eye, without springing the thimble apart, threading it through and then bending it all back into shape before resplicing?...better to incorporate a shackle that fits tween thimble and...

How to safely dispose of an old hand held flare ?

Options to try; Your nearest MRCC may be able to give you a heads up on local disposal. You could try the local Police or the nearest Coastguard. You could even try the local supplier of that sort of flare, some of 'em have a take-it back deal. Of course the big hiccup, is that they(...

Classics Range - Green River - WIP - some questions first

Not too original I hope, for those original handles were Gawdawful square slabs. It was on account of this feature that most every "Green River" that I ever saw, had had its handle doctored with file or rasp. Most users had their handles drastically reduced and then covered in palm and needle...

    What did you buy today?

Ten "sail" needles for hand sewing canvas. Am not altogether happy as the design and sizing appears to have dramatically changed, presumably to cater for the modern sail cloths and artificial twines. Still, not to worry, for I have a few of the traditional sort, albeit in the larger sizes. And...

Anyone ever seen one of these?

Perhaps only the Yorkie members would know that , for many years, there was a flock of these Black Swans as residents on Wetwang Pond...and, as the pond was pretty close to a pub used by walkers, I have always imagined there would have been some , "what the h*ll" moments from those who had...

    I think it's time

Five weeks today, so it dosn't really count as quitting. Over 50 years of smoking, the last 25 being pipe only. Cold turkey, and I reckon it was the emotional jolt of of loosing my labrador that has made me use that sad event as a stage from which to do some good for myself. On the other hand...

Sewing heavy canvas - recommendations for resources

Yes, with that very heavy stuff, ,American cotton in 15 or 18 ounce, ordinary canvaswork with palm and needle is very , very difficult to say the least. I have just made up a couple of pouches and your best bet is to use the saddle stitch wherever you can, and dont forget to use the saddle...

OT: Offshore Work – Looking for Help

Yup, there,s definitely a limit on turning out cufflinks, keyfobs and bellropes, and the odd cosh. I used to either take away some leather for projects, or misappropriate canvas or even the odd lump of wood that looked suitable for carving. To this day, I still practice wire working skills, God...
