I have a head full of diverse trivia but usually fail to remember more than a handful of knots, so sometimes I practice a few new ones (=forgotten ones) with a short length of string. If I'm feeling particularly ambitious I use a long shortth of string.

Thinking outside the box for a moment: you could make significant thermal gains with a decent inflatable sleeping pad without adding much bulk. Just a thought

From what I recall from my time in Thailand, the fuel of choice was eucalyptus despite bamboo being plentiful. As others have said, it's very hard and doesn't burn readily, in fact it's used as a single use cooking vessel over a fire.

The temptation is to get rid of the water as fast as possible but that just exacerbates the problem downstream. Ideally the movement of water should be slowed which is what trees, soakaways and floodplains do.
