Savlon vs Germolene vs Neosporin vs Chloramphenicol

Nodding to Janne, as I have no knowledge of tropical climes, do what he recommends. In the spring I gather fresh yarrow leaves (fronds?). Herbals and foraging books recommend young shoots of whatever as being the tastiest. Because we are interested in secondary metabolites which are usually...

    Catching rabbits humanely?

You are correct. Unicellular organisms out-mass the Arthropoda. The chart is, however, Mammalia. Insectivory is known, but rare, among humans. It occurs where there ain't nuttin' else to eat.

tl;dr :emoji_violin:I don't know but I've been told:emoji_violin:, double antibiotics are better than triple antibiotics. I do know from personal observation and controlled experiments that my green goop (yarrow/plantain/beeswax/tea tree oil) works better than Neosporin. Cuts heal faster...

Steel strikers, bought, for flint & steel

I didn't search for previous discussions of this topic. I whack old files in my vise to make 2" pieces for striking flints. They work just fine. I see beautiful smithed strikers with curlicues and etched makers' marks on the big river. Has anyone tried both? Is there any utilitarian reason to...

    Catching rabbits humanely?

Just in case anyone wants to go full-metal-jacket rugged-individualist, here's a reality check: The green squares are available for you and 7 billion other people. Raise the bunnies in a hutch. Support your local civilization. The alternative is long pig. see https://xkcd.com/1338/

    Sporran type pouch

Very nice. The pet supplies store where I shop has in the dog chews aisle an assortment of bone and antler pieces. I've made bone tools for clay sculpture and antler mallets for flintknapping. Just a thought.

    Catching rabbits humanely?

Paraphrasing Steve Martin: "Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me." “Of all tyrannies, one sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies, for those who torment...

A question for the makers on here..

Bedroll: I found a 9' x 12' canvas drop cloth at the local hardware store. Done. No grommets, no tie-outs, no tabs, nothing. I roll in a couple of really nice new wool blankets from a current manufacturer. I tie it up with 5-strand jute cord from a garden shop. Sewing machine: yes, that will...

A question for the makers on here..

Define "waxed". If you want to go the traditional route, get plain canvas of a suitable weight, make your pack, and then wax it. "Greenland" wax is (according to the recipe I use from Google) a 50/50 mix of beeswax and US paraffin wax. [I know that "paraffin" means "kerosene" in English...

What excites you about spring arriving?

So we should ask you about spring sometime next August? Gotcha. "If summer comes on a weekend this year we can have a picnic."

    Unexpected wood supply, unsplittable

I'd like to go to those places but this is the only planet I can reach in my car. Even this 'new' continent has 20,000 years of footprints and coprolites. <snark intended >

    Wood gas stove

I added a shelf of galvanized hardware cloth at the bottom of the burn chamber. The pellets don't roll out the bottom so much. Two air holes, one on the outer can, one on the inner, align to allow a splint to reach in under that shelf and light the stove. (Fully cognizant of the health risks...

    First aid kit

Some years ago a driver had the good sense to flip her minivan in the neighborhood where the firefighters and cops live. Firefighters broke out the windshield, got out most of the passengers easily. The car seat with the infant was stuck and no one had a knife. Kid was ok, happy ending. I...

Tried that, didn't work. Banged on the embedded hatchet with another log and nothing useful happened. Wooden wedges, my usual techinque in this situation, just splintered. Let's all calm down, this is an armchair exercise.

    Unexpected wood supply, unsplittable

As stated, I had an ax in the car. Scenario is "how to do this without an ax". Firestarting was a bomb: I used a bog paper roll stuffed with pine and cedar splits, soaked in wax, with a candle wick run through. The magnesium ribbon in the bundle was just for fun. Down-and-dead wood is plentiful...
