It is a great demo and very ingenious, but I always felt he cheated a little bit by selecting a particular line spool to take with him. I've no doubt though, that he could have come up with a solution without the spool.

Then again that's the whole point of letting them select their own 10 items, the same as we pick our own favourites for a trip.
 
That is a very tidy DIY rod.

On the very very few episodes of Alone I have watched, I have been frustrated with the normal effort of trying to use handlines to catch fish with barbless hooks. At least with a makeshift rod one stands half a chance at keeping the tension on the line.

Maybe I've just missed the episodes/series when more participants use rods.

Yes with the spool.
I also liked how he showed more than talked, & explained that he practiced his skills in advance of needing them.

Wouldn't have taken much to cut a "round", bore a hole in middle and cut a v notch around the circumference to hold the line.

Would not have been as smooth as plastic spool but programme allows you to make choices and that type of spool is quite common for holding 300m of line.
