What are you growing?

My Figs ( In containers - maybe thats the problem) are also less than impressive - any one have any tips ref feeding them or care for them??

I was hoping someone else had some advice as I've not had much success myself with figs in containers. Plenty of places seem to grow them ok in pots, such as the various RHS gardens.

The one in my photo was one of 4 pot grown cuttings and has about 20 ripening figs on it. The best pot grown one only about 4.

I think the most important thing is to remember to keep them watered and occasionally fed. They seem to have a reputation of being tough and therefore neglectable but even the one in the ground needs watering.

I just use whatever I've got to hand to feed them, a general purpose feed if the leaves are looking a bit yellow or small and a tomato feed if I want to encourage fruits.

A good soil based compost is also best to pot them up in.

I have had loads of tomatoes, cucumbers been good, peppers are also doing well for a change. Pattypan squash still producing, they tend to be more resilient than courgettes and having cut off the manky leaves I have had another flush of leaves then flowers/fruit.

I didn't put aubergines in as I was late planting and typically struggle to get them ripe due to lack of sun, but ironically would probably have faired well this year!

I do need to think about starting pak choi and Asian greens off this month, and maybe I will risk a late season sowing of peas.....

Figs: I had a layered cutting given to me by a neighbour in the spring, it is in a pot in the polytunnel (as they like having constricted roots), I have been watering it and although it's only in its first year there are some small figs developing on it. It will be planter properly in a polytunnel bed (but with rocks around to constrain roots) when I do the winter polytunnel beds update.

I harvested the aubergine 'beast' today, surprisingly little wastage, probably 900g of usable fruit, good job I like them. (I think I've mentioned before aubergines are surprisingly easy to grow, similar to tomatoes).
