Drawknife recommendations

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Ray Isles (The old tool store) has several old ones, £35--£70. Also new ones from Ray, £60--£68.
I'm sure that I've seen Dave Budd advertise. Must be many blacksmiths able to knock something up.

Of course you could also have a go DIY. Quite a simple shape to make.
I've already got an old one, but does need new handles.

Alex.

I have a Ray Iles large drawknife bought off Teal from this forum. Can't fault it, a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and a great tool. I've used it for paddles and bows.

Go to an antiques dealer or house clearance companies. You’ll often get a better quality blade for less money as a lot of people selling in those places don’t know what they are. I got one that just needed a proper clean, sharpen and strop. In my case I also made a ‘sheath’ for it too:
Can you say what the full inscription on the draw knife is? I'm intrigued about the W. GIL... and what looks to be Wedges?

Hi Hugh, the blade carries stamps of two pairs of crossed axes, with text “W. GILPIN WEDGES MILLS WARRANTED” between the pairs of axes. From a quick google, this seems to be made in Wedges Mill, a small hamlet near Cannock in Staffs.

Thank you - I thought it might be a really specialised smith forging wedges and draw knives!

And beautiful leatherwork - it works visually so well with the tool and looks superbly made

I finally got round to buying one off Dave Budd. Expensive, yes, but he is very good at what he does, and the tool is good at doing what it ought too as well.
