All six species of deer are found in the Peterborough area. I can't see positive evidence of one cleave being longer than the other (which, as John says, would indicate Muntjac) and the print does not look 'robust' enough for Red; Kepis has suggested Fallow so I assume that's rejected - Sika is pretty rare in that area, so I'm going to go with Roe

So close…

Final clue (which I only found out retrosptively), we were not far from the village of Oundle and Ashton hall.

Wow…. I actually had to look that up, I thought you were swearing at me in Spanish or something. Now that is a very interesting species with a really cool story too.

Ok, the game is up. The species was a herd of Sika deer! Descendants of an escaped herd from a local estate. Unmistakable head dress on them, and I believe they create small herds for winter and into spring. Very exciting this was my first time seeing this species.
