Just thought I would update this thread. I have found an app for my phone which can identify birds from their sounds. It's called Merlin by Cornell labs. I've only been playing with it for a couple of days but so far I am very impressed. I just sat in my front garden listening to the traffic...

Check out KEXP on YouTube. They have a really eclectic mix of music and do live sets that remind me of the Old Grey Whistle Test. I have been exposed to all kinds of stuff through them. I have learnt that I don't need to understand the language to enjoy the music. Z
