Latvia tells citizens how to spot Russian spies

It's the Latvian government you have to blame for this suggestion, not the Guardian, who are just reporting it! Apparently here, they get jobs as fruit pickers on a farm right next to RAF Lakenheath... and no doubt many other similar jobs as you say.

What I did NOT buy today!

Looks like just the thing for Zelensky to wear next time he meets Trump.

Latvia tells citizens how to spot Russian spies

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/15/latvia-shares-spy-spotting-guide-to-help-public-expose-russian-saboteurs "A shabby, unkempt appearance"... "unusual amount of outdoor survival equipment"... any Russian agents around here? ;)

Two pint, NOT one litre, 58 pattern water bottle

I have 2 dated 2013 and 2014, and they're 990ml and 1030ml repsectively when filled to the brim, so both under a litre useful capacity.

Cheap Dehydrated Rations - Heads up.

Sampled the chilli con carne today, and it's actually fairly pleasant. Best of the bunch. The beans don't rehydrate too well though, I'd recommend at least doubling the rehydration time for this one.

Here's an AI ad I don't understand: It's for an investment platform whose selling point is that you can have your investments track the portfolios of other members, and benefit from their expertise. The ad purports to show some of the other investors on the platform that you could follow, but...

any suggestions for a decent tent?

Was just on the Go Outdoors web site and noticed the Phoxx 2 is back in stock now, at a bargain £58.65 if you use discount code APRIL15.

An alarming and very plausible idea.

Cheap Dehydrated Rations - Heads up.

Thanks for the tip on these. I ordered a box yesterday and they came today, so I sampled the chicken tikka massala for lunch and the pasta bolognese for dinner. The packs are pretty slim, which is usually not a good sign - in my experience, the less bulky the pack, the more likely you end up...

Trees that fell but didn't die

Out walking at the weekend, I came across two fine examples of why when a tree falls over, the council doesn't necessarily need to immediately send out a man with a chainsaw to finish it off. This tree fell a long time ago. At least 4 big branches have continued to grow straight up and are...

    Thoughts on Premium Bonds

I was just looking at the list of April winners: https://www.nsandi.com/prize-checker/winners If you go to page 31, you can see someone in Scotland has won £25,000 on a single £1 bond from 1969! The majority of prizes are going to people who hold the maximum £50,000, as you would expect I suppose.

    No heat instant/emergency food?

I made some of those over Christmas too - with some seasonally-appropriate dried cranberries and ginger. Had one the other day and it still seemed good. I think with biscuit type things generally, they don't seem cooked when they're cooked. Supposedly when they come out of the oven, they should...

any suggestions for a decent tent?

I have one and would happily recommend it as a good-value option... but it's disappeared from the Go Outdoors web site! Whether temporarily or permanently, I have no idea. The main thing people complain about is it's inner-first pitching, but it is possible to tie the inner and outer together...
