I’ve just read a romance by someone called Kelsey McKnight. She is very obviously American. Her novels are set in the Highlands and among the Scottish nobility (as she sees it!) The stories are good, well structured and fun but oh deary me. She attempts to write dialogue with a brogue...

    Flint & Steel

He won’t - not with a flint and steel. He’s going to have to have patience. Are you happy with the system yourself? I find it’s the transfer that’s harder than the ember. I gave two six year old Grandsons ferro rods and scrapers when we camped in the spring. They used those well (They...

    Sharpening steels

I would agree to an extent but it isn’t quite as clear cut as that. My Prestige steel (part of a meat carving set) has longitudinal groves and is magnetic. It works like a very shallow file and I can see the material that it has removed when I wipe it with a paper towel.

    Stoopid jokes

From time to time I respond to readers questions in the New Scientist. (In an amateur exchange column) Two weeks ago a comedian posed the question: Why do human beings feel the urge to share their thoughts with others? This to a column specifically for sharing thoughts and ideas!!! I thought...

    Getting away for the weekend.

Sorry indeed that your outing has been delayed. Very impressed at the speed with which you are able to get scans and MRI. Hope everything is transient and you are 100% for the replay.

    Sharpening steels

Long ago I worked for the Forestry Commission. We routinely used bill hooks sickles and scythes . We carried dual tapering carborundum stones just over a foot long. Now I use a similar stone but it is flat on two faces. It soon develops curved edges.

Grill recommendations for a Zebra pot

I make bread in a vertical 16cm Zebra pot. There is an article somewhere. (Mods - for some reason the toolbar is greyed out - I can’t add a link to the article. [OR italicise this note!!!]) I used garden wire and custom made a trivet for my dough pan to sit on. I presume that you will use...

    Sharpening stones

THIS ^^^^^^^^^ is the most sensible thing that I’ve read about sharpening on this forum. Me? I carry a two sided axe puck in my rucksack for nearly everything Camping. (as opposed to chisels and gouges.)

Am I carrying too much gear.

Don’t forget that you might be carrying your big outer layer jacket strapped to the bag when it gets hot. While this is sounding very manageable it’s still worth looking for reductions. On the other hand, if 13kg + is manageable then you can afford the odd luxury in there! Do you know how far...

    I, Robot , I Soldier.

Take a look at Hanna Fry on AI and look at the pathetic defences put forward by Uber and Tesla - but they have big money and powerful lawyers. Edited to add: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002r9c1/ai-confidential-with-hannah-fry-series-1-2-death-by-driverless-car Also: Why Tesla’s AI...

Am I carrying too much gear.

You’ve been so careful about recording your kit. If you are prepared to keep the record going, I’d be very interested in your: Need it Used it regularly Used it but could have managed Didn’t need it (Didn’t need it but want it anyway) …….post camp analysis. I think that your fixed blade is...
