Is there a thread for basic general kit recommendations?

If you want to have a play around with tarp configurations sometime (for shade, shelter, privacy - even with a tent) you could take a look here... http://www.equipped.org/tarp-shelters.htm Some are quite complicated but you may find two or three that work for you. I like the Adirondack Wind...

What wildlife did you spot today?

Three or four Leverets hopping around, playing it seemed to me. I was stationary about 30 - 40m away watching quietly (with and without bins) and they didn't seemed overly concerned about me. After a couple of minutes they headed across and disappeared into some Gorse. Nice moment, especially so...

    What are you currently reading?

Just finished Earth to Moon: A Memoir, by Moon Unit Zappa. Wow! What a weird and disturbing upbringing Moon had. It doesn't reflect at all well on her parents, Frank and Gail Zappa. Very interesting and immensely readable...

What wildlife did you spot today?

Not spotted, but heard: My first Cuckoo of the year in the Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons National Park, just to the north of Twmpa and Rhos Dirion yesterday. Heard it (them?) several times during the day.

    Walking sticks and staffs

I have a pair of Leki poles but only use one of them; the other lives in the car as backup. I wouldn't be without a hiking pole as I find it very useful for easing ascents, and especially so for confidence on steeper descents as my knees are not what they used to be. I don't use the handle loop...

    Woodland Custodianship

If you have some species of interest on your ground then perhaps donation to a local Wildlife Trust could be in order? If so, then a chat and a walk round with one or two of their officers may be helpful to determine their interest?

    What did you buy today?

It's not quite the 65-foot ocean-rated motor yacht that I had in mind when I clicked on "Buy Now". But, on the plus side, it did cost me several £million less. I thought I'd put it all together to check it out and see before planning its maiden voyage.

    Modifying Solo Pot

I made a removeable bail handle for my Ti pot from part of a push-bike brake cable. The connectors were utilised from the innards of a piece of regular cable connector (shown at the bottom of the pic). The handle slides on to the pot and fits under the lip.

    Compact emergency food supply.

Try searching for Logan Bread. Various recipes and you can tweak to your taste. For example: "Logan bread is a dense quick bread full of dried fruits and nuts. Named after Mount Logan in the Yukon, Logan Bread’s delicious taste, high-calorie content, indestructibility, and non-perishability...

    Stoopid jokes

I thought that a "Tarte au Citron" was a certain sort of lady in a French car?

    Stoopid jokes

There are two theories about winning an argument with a woman. Neither of them work.

    Man cave

A lady friend described my whole house as a Man Cave. (Perhaps she was intimating that I tidy up a little?)
