What wildlife did you spot today?

Amusing. And stressful for me as the viewer: "Go on my son. Go on my son..."

    Stoopid jokes

People always complain about the weather, but no one ever seems to do anything about it.

    Just add water.....

I make my own Trail Mix (10 fruits and 6 types of nut). A handful of this with a handful or two of rolled Oats, then soaked in a little water for half an hour or so makes a very tasty and healthy breakfast / snack as all the ingredients have softened a little from the water. If you have the...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

Isn't the more politically correct term these days "a low-net-worth individual"? ;)

    Anybody used a sun compass?

Richard Graves' Bushcraft book has a couple of sections on the use of the Sun Clock / Sun Compass, including instructions on how to construct one. Abrams, Bagnold, Cole and Howard are all makes of Sun Compass that I've come across. This is one that I produced for the N Hemisphere from Graves'...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

BT have been rolling out Digital Voice, their "next generation home phone". "We're making the switch because the analogue network that most home phones work on today is no longer fit for purpose and can't keep up with the demands of modern life. That outdated network will be switched off for...

    What did you buy today?

What make / model is it? I ask as I'm thinking of getting myself one rather than using the oven for making jerky / biltong. Ta.

    Shelf stable protein

I was flicking through the US Forest Service's Wilderness Ranger Cookbook yesterday and came across this (quoted verbatim). Not quite a pouch meal but nonetheless, protein and long-lasting. And fast! "The Eagle Cap Club Jim Bradley, 10 seasons, Eagle Cap Wilderness 1 dry salami, the hottest...

What wildlife did you spot today?

I didn't know that Beavers wore gloves. Although, come to think of it, maybe they get a better grip of the tree when gnawing at it?

    Time

I completely agree. For example, at the hour change change at the end of March the day length (sunrise - sunset) for me at 52°N is around 12h 50m. And at the end of October at the change back it's around 10h. Can't see the logic in the asymmetry myself...maybe it's something to do with the...

    What did you buy today?

A Trangia Gas Burner Storm... This is for my Firebox Stove Gen 2. So now, according to whim, situation and fuel availability the stove'll run on wood, meths, gel, Sterno, charcoal / briquettes, Esbit / equivalent, and now gas. It's a good add-on for me as now I have two easily-managed...

I've had several that I've been pleased with from Evaq8. I've bought other stuff from them as well.

What wildlife did you spot today?

Saw my first Frogspawn of the year today, in a small pool on open country at around 360m / 1,200ft in Radnorshire, Powys. Several clumps of it in the pool.
