    What did you buy today?

I bought a USAF surplus Propper ABU shirt. It has a good, pixelated, tiger stripe pattern, but was far too light grey. I over-dyed it Olive Green. It came out quite well, and it looks good, although there is a clearly defined wide stripe on each arm that didn't take the dye well. It must have...

    Best size axe

The Scouts used a selection of axes to split hardwood (beech and chestnut) rounds and to make kindling yesterday. The boy's/forest type axes were a very useful and effective size for splitting, even for the smaller scouts. A few of them made good use of the 16" 1.25/1.5lb axes for a bit of...

The 40cm handle gives a much more useful swinging ability than a 30cm handle.

    Best size axe

As I posted, earlier, I agree with Hillbill on the usefulness of smaller axes. These get used by our scouts and leaders for a range of tasks. The nicer (HB) one on the left is 1.25lb (560g), the one in the right is 1.5lb (680g). They both have 16" (40cm) handles.

    Best size axe

It all depends upon what you want to do with it. I have found that a fairly small axe head with a 16" handle is a very useful tool and easy to carry. I wouldn't bother with anything smaller. A 2-2.5lb head with ~20+ inch handle is big enough to fell small trees, to chop and split logs and more...

    Man cave

I made a selection of maces from sports balls (and a larger one moulded in a big plant pot) postcrete and sledgehammer handles. I turned a wooden Persian Meel on my Dad's lathe. I bought a couple of steel clubs. Sandbags are great. Mine are old army kit bags of different sizes.

It was Scouting that got me into Bush Crafting, can any other claim the same?

It probably depends upon the leaders, but we have a Guides group who meet in a church hall next door to our scout hut. They do different activities to Scouts, possibly more traditional ones, and their leader has apparently made reference to girls going to scouts instead if they want to do some...

It was Scouting that got me into Bush Crafting, can any other claim the same?

I was in Boys Brigade as a boy in the 1980s-early 90s. I am now a scout leader. Activities depend on the knowledge/skills/enthusiasm/availability of the leaders. We do bushcraft activities with our group. There is a lot more regulation, requirement for qualifications for some events and...
