My probably annual winter jacket recommendation thread!!

I have had a Craghoppers Waverley jacket in black for the past two winters. I have been really impressed with it. It is possibly the best all-round coat that I have owned It is waterproof, has a good hood, good pockets and is a fairly warm UK coat -but it would not be up to Arctic winter night...

    Rough walking stick/staff

I whittled down the end of the stick, then tapped the Alpine spike tip onto it before inserting the nails that hold it in place.

    Rough walking stick/staff

I took this stick on a fairly arduous scramble and walk recently. It performed well. It is a good length and a good thickness for my hand.

    Ancient britain

That's interesting. The ones that I was referring to are not coal slag, though.

    Ancient britain

I would like to see many of our currently very large areas of tussocky, treeless, grassy, moorland restored to forest. Small areas of fenced off land fairly quickly becime woodland. Near my parents house, in a post-undustrial town, what were originally waste tips have, without any obvious...

    Rough walking stick/staff

Having field tested the wizard stick, the verdict is in: It's a big thumbs up. The right length Very comfortable in both hands Sturdy No vibration The varnish held up on the grip The Scouts thought it was good.

    My DIY weekend

That is brilliant, John Fenna. I too enjoy making things, but that is an impressively extensive collection you have there!

    Rough walking stick/staff

It was a bit of an experiment. The linseed oil kept being absorbed and it wasn't going to give the finish I wanted. I thought that varnish would add water repellency and a more contrasting finish. The stick then also absorbed quite a bit of varnish.

    Rough walking stick/staff

Sturdy looking, but of untested performance.

    Rough walking stick/staff

I recently found a stick (possibly some sort of cherry from a garden) in a wood pile at our scout hut that was being chopped up for fire wood. It had presumably been there for some time as it was very dry. The thin end snapped off to the ideal length that is now, which may or may not be a good...

    Russian Army Trench Shovel

Yes, the handle is just well used. I have not given it any artificial weathering. I did give it a bit of a clean before coating it with linseed oil. It was a bit loose and would rotate a little, so I shimmed it with pieces of aluminium from a beer can. I considered painting the metalwork, but...

Wording of ‘zombie knife and machete’ ban being reported?

That is my concern. Carrying a fixed knife in public already needs "good reason" and cutting or killing people with/without blades has been illegal for a very long time.

    Russian Army Trench Shovel

Having seen these shovels pop up in various articles and videos, I bought one. It is a well-used Russian army example, rather than a new Cold Steel one. The handle was removed, coated with raw linseed oil (along with the head) a couple of times and left it a week to cure. The handle was...

Wording of ‘zombie knife and machete’ ban being reported?

What will happen when people start using, erm, "non-zombie", garden tools to attack each other? Will garden tools be banned?

Snugpak Elite 3 not very warm

I am well aware of zip baffles etc. and carefully fastening and unfastening them. The Snugpak Elite 3 almost always snags it zip. I would have been disappointed overall had I bought it new.

Snugpak Elite 3 not very warm

Having only used the Elite 3 a couple of times since spring, it hasn't really been tested in low temperatures. It was comfortable in a tent in Scotland this week over windy 10DegC nights. I would regard it as a well-constructed sleeping bag, other than the zip snagging almost every time it is...

    Sleeping mat

I bought a Dutch army one based on reading this. I'm very pleased with it. It is much better than the Decathlon one that I had been using. Cheers

    Micro urban Essentials pouch?

My EDC kit inspired by thread has been really useful so far. Sticking plasters, usb cables & power bank, painkillers, SAK scissors, pencil and paper. All have been used when out and about. The pouch really doesn't need too much over-thinking.
