    Thanks for the replies, makes for interesting reading. I've noticed that the bark peels off them to leave a new yellow coloured bark underneath, so does anyone know if this bark is any good for tinder?

    Thanks for the advice. I'm not that consistant when it comes to my birch bark fire lighting so your tips are much appreciated, especially regarding the greater reedmace because theres loads near me and I'd never thought to use it before. Thanks again. Alex

    Whats the best way of using birch bark to light your fire? I've only ever used the thicker birch bark taken from dead birch, but I was wondering if you can peel the thinner paper like bark of the tree when it's still alive without damaging it?
