Well, in the UK at least, there's no reason at all to harm snakes, or slowworms, or lizards etc. I lived next to a realy horrible person who would kill slowworms whenever she saw them because she was frightened of them :banghead2:
Most people I know kill snakes on sight. I try to wait until I know it’s not a Kingsnake. Rattlesnake roundups are usually community events.

I don't know about the rattle snakes in Florida, but some years ago there was a program on BBC Natural World following Kenney Salwey last River Rat on the Mississippi, where he talked about having once hunted rattle snakes for the bounty. At time of filming he described how there were ever fewer snakes and he came to realise they were not inexhaustible, and now leaves them alone.

It was a good program.
