might be a bit of a daft idea here, but I will add it anyways as it makes perfect sense to me.
if you have the GPS co ordinates, and you can say accurately where you are to within a few meters, and the altitude is the main thing you are lacking, that you need to know, then an Ordinance survey map has the contour lines to show your altitude from sea level, so if you plot your position there, then you should be pretty much bang on the money, give or take........
