I have just got back from another great meet with the Sussex BCUK Mob at Broadstone Warren near East Grinstead. We had the chute up & handful of the regulars for the now traditional Christmas Dinner on a campfire December meet. This year we pushed the boat out with a 'Trash Can Turkey' thanks to Robin & Jack, which worked really well. We used a small stainless beer cask with the top removed, a decent sized bird & a few bags of charcoal to produce one of the best & most moist Turkey meals I have had in a while. Details this marvel of Redneck Engineering can be found here:

We had roast potatoes, 5 types of veg, sauseges, stuffing, gravy & flambeed Christmas Pudding for afters, all cooked on a fire under the parachute. Here are a few pics:

We all had a great time, eat well & chilled out before the Christmas Holidays are upon us once more

We plan to do some more of these soon including 'Trashcan Chicken' & the infamous 'beer butt chicken', plus I am planning on bringing along a smoker to one of the next few meets , so hopefully the quality of our food will get much better in 2013.

So glad I bought the meat thermometer with me as it really took the guesswork out (we roasted some pork as well and that was perfect, although we were all a bit stuffed by the time it was cooked!)

The first night was a bit miserable with the wet weather. The fire just wouldn't burn properly and we realised that it had burnt through the logs buffering it from the wet ground. On Saturday morning we built an altar fire which raised it up about a foot - was the best fire we've ever had

We'll have better timings for next time - the potatoes were perfect but got left in the oven and were a little "Cajun" for my liking. The stuffing balls were confiscated by the police as offensive projectiles... :D

You leave my balls alone, they were perfect at the original cooking period. Just got missed when we were juggling everything else.

But well done everyone, goes to show what you can do when everyone mucks in and helps out. We are starting to look like we know what we are doing. Chute went up without a hitch, fire wood sourced and prepped and lots of food prep done. Roll on next meet!

Will post my dodgy pics in a bit.

Thanks to everyone who was there and welcome Crosslandkelly, now you are one of us, be afraid, be very afraid!

And so, the experiment begins, turkey in a beer barrel? Are we mad?

We may be cooking in the woods, but we can be energy efficient too. Dutch oven towers, sausages in bacon on Christmas pudding steaming on roast potatoes with the turkey barrel holding it all together.

Lets not forget the veggies on the perfectly made fire. You can be the best chef in the world, but you are nothing without the means to cook by.

One chuffed chef, and rightly so.
